the units are out on the street 24/7 and they take a beating. and mechanically, the wear and tear during the summer months, is extreme. reporter: there were a lot of calls for help yesterday by people in heavy uniforms. in 90-plus degree heat at the memorial day parade. residents are concerned. i wonder who is listening. i think they should do something about it. because it s very serious. reporter: the city s fire chief acknowledges the extreme heat is presenting a challenge. right now we have we re two units down. earlier during the day we were ten units down but we were able to mobilize the emergency reserve fleet and get some units back in service. reporter: the union is skeptical there are enough reserve units, ambulances and fire trucks and said some firefighters and paramedics are being pressured to ride in trucks that need fixing. i m told some of them are being asked to work for those not in service. it is still down for preventative maintenance as

thanks for joining us on a tuesday. time for traffic and weather every ten minutes. we will check in with lisa in a moment. we start with an appladam caskey. very heavy rainfall will continue. the flooding is a concern. there s a flash flood watch in effect for the entire region. there s the view from the rooftop. it is still very dark outside because of the clouds and showers moving into the metro area. the rain is moving from the southeast to the northwest which is opposite of what we are used to. the heaviest rain right now is in charlestown and martinsburg. that is pushing further into the potomac highlands. scattered rain off and on through the day. flash floods are possible. low 70 s this afternoon for the high temperature and it does not get better tomorrow. things are decent on 95 and 66, and all travel times on 270. the green light on the dulles toll road. that does not mean we don t have slow traffic but what you normally experience in the rain is what you will
