UEC Theatres has announced that in addition to its 17 theaters that reopened in June and August 2020, five more of its movie theaters will open today. Premiere Theater in Hillsdale is one of those to reopen.
“Our employees and general managers are more than excited to bring entertainment and some fun back to the communities we serve, Mike Ross, president and CEO of United Entertainment Corp. said in a release. Movie fans have been overwhelmingly supportive. They want to go to the movies again.”
Guests can enjoy new movie releases immediately as “Scoob!” opens today. A selection of other recent titles will be playing, too, such as Godzilla vs. Kong, The Wrath of Man, Mortal Kombat, and Raya and the Last Dragon. The Summer Movie Season is starting to heat up with Cruella and A Quiet Place Part II opening next week.
The modern summer movie season, which runs from May through Labor Day, regularly accounts for over $4 billion in revenue and makes up around 40% of the year’s grosses. Last year, summer earnings were $176 million, down 96% from 2019. Theaters have been gearing up for this moment and this summer will be an important gauge on whether habits have changed irrevocably during the pandemic.
In some ways, the calendar looks like a do-over of last summer. Many of the most anticipated releases were supposed to come out a year ago, including John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place Part II (May 28), Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning “In the Heights” (June 11), the ninth “Fast & Furious” movie, “F9” (June 25), Marvel’s “Black Widow” (July 9) starring Scarlett Johansson, the Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson action adventure “Jungle Cruise” (July 30) and the “Candyman” reboot (Aug. 27).

HOLLYWOOD I will admit 2020 had to be one of the worst years for cinema in my opinion. I cannot recall a time where I didn’t know what movies were coming out, yet being placed in a situation where I could not go to the actual theater. I am a movie buff and sitting in a dark room with others watching a comedy, a suspense thriller, an action flick, a drama, animation, a horror film or a family flick was devastating.
There is nothing wrong with watching a movie at home, but there are certain movies that must be seen in a theater people and it delivers an experience that the home just can’t give you no matter how much you want to think it does.
