Volusia beaches less crowded on Fourth of July most likely due to rain

“[Saturday] was very slow and crowds on the beach have been like on normal weekends."  Those who braved the on-and-off rain on Sunday had to run for shelter shortly after 4 p.m. when a summer storm moved in. People left in large numbers as lightning streaked across dark, looming clouds. In the parking lot of Sun Splash Park at 611 S. Atlantic Ave, families grabbed their children as large raindrops fell and strong wind gusts blew sand and dust all over. "I only had two hours on the beach, but we had fun," said Juan Ortiz, who drove from Savannah, Georgia, to spend time on the beach with his family. "We had a beautiful day, but we are leaving because the storm is coming."
