changes for the weekend. the cooling trend continues right through earlyex week. i'll detail that for you and talk about how much cooler we are going to get. katie. >> thank you, lisa. >> caught in the line of fire. a young girl is in the hospital after being shot in the neck. she was playing in her yard after bullets started flying and another man was wounded. police don't know who was the target. it happened yesterday in oakland on 66th avenue near international boulevard. around 6:30 in the evening. the girl was taken to children's hospital oakland. alan wang has details. >> police say bullets from half a block away pierced this wood fence and struck a young girl playing on the other side. >> i heard a young girl trying. -- crying. >> juan said he heard 10 or 16 shots and ran to help the girl who was bleeding badly in her front yard. >> how bad was it? >> bad. >> another man halfway down the block was also shot several times but police aren't sure if was he the intended target or if he was caught in the line of fire. >> we don't have a good description on the gunman at all. >> it happened on 66th avenue in this neighborhood east of international boulevard. sky seven was overhead as officers collected evidence. there was at least one driving vehicle driving southbound in the 1800 block of 66th avenue. at least two individuals exited the vehicle and fired several rounds. >> placecy the few witnesses they have, are not fully cooperating. in oakland, abc7 news. >> police and fire crews are on alert in novato. they say an artnist has set 13 different fires there. most were grass fires but two were set near homes near south novato boulevard and redwood boulevard. we have the details. >> reporter: fire crews are on watch. they are joined by five police officers on special patrol. they are all hoping to keep a series of fires from happening again. one of them kept tracy up all night. >> she came over and started screaming and banging on our door, trying to get me up and said grab the babies, we have to go. >> her neighbor is the one who woke them up. her husband shot the pictures of the fires burning just yards from their home. but it's their normally quiet gray-haired shauna that is the hero because she started barking. >> if it wasn't for her i think we would have been in trouble because it was spreading very, very quickly. >> the dog's early barking called a quick call to 911 and a fast response from the fire department kept the grass fire from getting to homes. this is just one of the fires of -- that were burning at the same time in the area. the several fires singed the front door of this home. another burnt a car inside this garage. we're all bringing back terrible memories of a firebug on the loose two years ago in this neighborhood. this time she is spooked. >> if they were to do this again, their rooms are the first ones to go. it's too late. i don't want that. >> she decided her kids will not stay at home overnight for a while. >> investigators in walnut creek say four suspicions fires in a park they believe are all related, including this one. the fire is in the same spot as another fire two years ago and in the same area as three other fires in the past week. a fast response from cal fire crews in the south bay kept a brush fire from growing out of control. sky 7hd was there as helicopter speakers planes dropped retardant on the seven-acre fire. it was reported between santa clara and santa cruz county in the hills. no structures were ever in harm's way. major progress to report this morning on efforts to put out the destructive wildfires that are burning in san diego county. officials say they are nearing full containment on all but two of the 11 fires that broke out this week. fires burning at camp pendleton and the community of san marcos are still raging right now. but in other parts of the county residents were allowed to return home. >> the fire just blew down through the hills. kind of jumped over, came up the back hillside and we managed to keep my mom's house and guard house next door. >> yesterday a 57-year-old man pleaded not guilty to arson charges after he was seen adding dead brush to a fire in ocean side. fire investigators also included -- concluded sparks from faulty construction equipment accidentally touched off the 1200-acre rancho-bernardo fire. >> police in antioch are investigating the death of an 18-month-old boy who drown in a swimming pool. sky 7hd was over the pool shortly after he was found around 3:45 yesterday afternoon. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. authorities say there was a fence around the pool and adults were present at the present time of the drawing. they are interviewing everyone present to determine how the child drown. the family of one of the two bart track inspectors who was killed hit and killed by a train is suing the agency. his daughter is suing bart for being negligent when they sent him and the other man to check for a dip in the track near the walnut creek station. they were both veteran bart employees. the train was being operated by a trainee and three bart managers. this morning a san jose company is warning whoever stole a piece of equipment from one of its work trucks, that what they have is radioactive. the device is used to measure soil density and moisture content. the silicon valley soil engineering company tells our media partner, the san jose news, the radioactive material about the size of a tick tack and is surrounded by steal but can cause health problems if someone is directly exposed to it. >> people are being warned at a walnut creek school not to be alarmed by gunshots it's at walnut creek intermediate school. they are telling people ahead of time so they don't panic and assume the worst today during the training. this is the time of year when students are celebrating prom. last night it was enjoyed by students of all ages at lucille pack already children's hospital. ama daetz takes us to their prom. >> boys and girls, step up to the tenth annual hospital school prom at stanford lucille packard's children's hospital. >> basically it's kind of a cross between a cirque du soleil and a kid friendly festival. >> a prom that seems to surpass the traditional festivities by leaps and bounds thanks to the gymnastic teams from stanford and cal. kids can get their face planted and even play games where they can win prizes. >> i love this and this. >> that's so cool. good times for the little ones. while the big kids dance today their favorite songs. >> super nice. you get to hang out with all of your friends and you have fun and you can be yourself after being in the hospital. >> this 14-year-old was born with a congenital birth defect. it's in her feet. she's had four major surgeries and several other procedures. >> i wore tennis shoes for three-year now i can wear flats. it's really nice. for the hospital staff. >> they are beautiful people and they love our kids. they want them to be there. it's just amazing and they truly love these children. >> and they love them enough to give them a night they will never forget. ama hot, not too cold. >> sonoma county's district attorney said she's still reviewing the shooting death of a 13-year-old santa rowsa boy who was shot by a deputy last october. according to "the press democrat" her officer is still determining whether the deputy should face criminal charges in the death of andy lopez. lopez was killed october 122nd as he walked along the avenue carrying an air soft bb gun resembling an ak-47. the officer testified he thought the boy was carrying a real assault rifle. >> a former santa clara county supervisor who was found miss outing thousands. dollars in public funds has been released from george shirakowa was released after 7 years of his long sentence. he pleaded guilty to twelve charges, including corruption and gambling with public funds. he faces three years of probation, where he is not allowed to gamble and must attend counseling. it's probably one of the most annoying things people experience at home, calls from telemarketers. it can happen even if you are on the federal "do not call" list. here's michael finney with the inside scoop on how to make them stop. [ringing] [ringing] [rings] >> it happens all too often. you just sat down for dinner with your family and the phone rings. on the other end of the line, the telemarketer. >> it just became annoying. >> she lives in petaluma. she had her fill of tell he marketing calls because she often gets more than 10 a day. >> i was like i have to do something. >> she was so aggravated she stopped answering the phone and left the message on her answering machine. >> we will call you back promptly. this is our little effort to stop telemarketing calls. thanks. >> some are more persistent and they say this is good, you should here this. no. please put us on your "do not call" list. sometimes it works. >> one of the most common questions we receive in our office is how do i get the telemarketers to stop calling me? meet erica. she's worked as a telemarketer this southern california for years and she has a few insider tips to get telemarketers to stop calling. number one, answer the phone. >> one mistake that people commonly make is they let telemarketers call them over and over without picking up the phone. >> she said that's one of the worst things you can do. >> we will assume you are just not home or we can call another time. >> number two, don't hang up. >> definitely do not hang up the phone as soon as the telemarketer has identified themselves because we will assume you got disconnected and we will call you back. >> number three, after answering insist to be put on the "do not call" list. early in her career her boss taught her about the rule. >> you don't want to let someone off the phone until they have given you three clear indications they are not interested. >> number four, don't explain the reason you are not interested. >> you just want to clearly state the same thing. repeat you want to be put on the "do not call" list. >> number five, she said keep your anger in check. >> when you get angry at them, they might take it personally and as a way to retaliate, they will throw you back into the pool and then you will get called by another person. >> six, never give a telemarketer a reason to call you back. >> we will keep calling until you tell us not to. >> despite the fact that phyllis gets calls so often she rarely gets upset. well, kind of. >> never vial. just a little bit rude. >> our producers who worked on the story tried the tips and organizations, charities and survey companies can legally still call you. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. happening today hundreds of local children will release more than 2,000 chinook salmon into the san francisco bay. it's part of the kiss and release salmon event. officials say that the salmon have released the stage they must be released into the bay for preparation for life into the ocean. event is meant to be a fun experience for children, while also teaching them to learn about their role in salmon conservation. today's event runs from noon to four at blackie's pasture in tiberon. good news for san jose state students who will be returning next year. the school has scrapped plans to increase fees for the fall semester and is actually cutting them by $100. students have protested the fee which would have been the highest in the cal state system. administrators were going to charge almost $800 a year. instead they will pay $600. the money goes to fees for courses, athletics and technology. happening today, nancy pleasety will be delivering the graduation commencement address at the u.c. berkeley graduation ceremony. she's encouraging students to stay involved in public service and to be ready to challenge the status quo. today's commencement ceremony begins at 10:00 this morning at memorial stadium in berkeley. the clock strikes 6:18 this saturday morning. graduates up really early, i'm sure, to prepare for such a big day. >> absolutely. and so many times sitting in the hot sun and it's very, very warm, but today it will be nice. in the 70s in the east bay with a little bit of a breeze out there. we are looking at live doppler hd right now. low clouds and the marine layer at about 1,000 feet. that brings the cooler air to the valley today. no more upper 80s. you will be lucky if you hi the low 80s today around the delta and livermore. from san jose it's a nice, clear start with temperatures mainly in the 50s. numbers today in the santa clara valley will be just in the mid-70s. so nice afternoon on tap. even cooler for the second half of your weekend. 55 half moon bay. breezy winds there. oakland 56. here's santa cruz where it's pretty gray right now. that will continue through about the 9:00 hour then we will get sunshine. 51 napa, 355 livermore and the winds from the upper elevations. you see the marine layer with us. it will clear but the high clouds throughout the day today. mostly cloudy to start out and then sunny, high clouds. breezy this afternoon. cooling trend through monday. there is yet another system that will bring the temperatures into the upper 70s for our friends in the east bay valleys. so even further cool is on the way. so high pressure ridge is weakening, and that will allow for a trough of low pressure to allow the sea breeze to really kick up throughout the afternoon. and then yet another trough drops down from the gulf of alaska. that could even bring in a few showers in the mountains. a few more clouds for us and the further cooling as we get into tomorrow and monday. so the winds throughout the days today will beziest along the coast. you notice around the bay still coming in from the west. that will keep the numbers, the breeze up to 15, 20 miles an hour from oakland to livermore today. it should feel pretty good. napa about a 20 mile-an-hour wind and at times kind of gusty from the airport down through half moon bay. 75 in santa clara, as well as cupertino. redwood city mid-70s. low to mid-60s with fog from half moon bay and pacifica. 66 in south city with san francisco in the upper 60s. temperatures will be in the low 80s, but that's pretty far north from santa rosa and calistoga. 76 san rafael and stinson coming in at 64. low 70s in oakland. hayward about 70 today with 72 richmond. castro valley 73. you head over the hills and a nice afternoon with a few clouds. 80 in concord today with 77 in pleasanton. the accuweather seven-day forecast shows that today we will see temperatures in just the low 80s to the low 70s bay, and inland. and as we go through the weekend, the temperatures will stay just in the low 60s at the coast. remaining breezy. the coolest day monday, a few extra clouds and we look for a slow warming trend, low to mid-80s and nothing extreme going into next week. >> you are saying that for me? >> no, it was intense for sure. we will let morning. how he was found and where he was hiding for so long. and on a lighter note, a miraculous comeback story to tell you about this morning. this young man was deep in a coma with doctors really not expecting him to survive. and today, though, he's back in action and, in fact, back on the basketball court. look at him. we will tell you how he made it and the one doctor who had a hunch that pitcher in the cain is known for pinching the corners when he's on the mound but yesterday he had a lot more traditional kind of painting. he helped decorate the injection clinic at the st. mary's medical center. they were adding more color to brighten up the place for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. he painted the silhouette of batter. he said his mother has battled cancer and he's glad to pitch in. >> it's surprising being able to go through the situations and meeting some of the people that are part of that and meeting some of the people going through chemo, how much they can mid-50s. looking at 53 in san francisco with more of a breeze. here's a plan for the rest of the day. 60s not only at the coast but upper 60s san francisco and winds breezy here. it's allowing for cooling all across the bay with low 70s in oakland. mid-and upper 70s. look at the 80s. they are really out toward the valley. maybe a few by the delta and concord, but overall another aspect of the cooling trend with 4 to 8 degrees of cooling today. we will talk about the continuing to the second half of your weekend in a few minutes. katie. >> thank you, lisa. new this morning, president obama said he's heading to the baseball hall of fame to show how tourism can lead to good-paying american jobs. he will visit there thursday. he said tourism is an export that can grow the economy. he's pitching to congress to spend more to modernize bridges, roads and ports. he said first-class infrastructure attracts first-class jobs. >> we know manufactures don't set up shops with crumbling roads, they set up jobs with the newest transportation networks that let them invent and sell goods made in america as fast as possible. here's the problem. if congress doesn't act by the end of this summer, federal funding for transportation projects will run out. >> the president warns almost 700,000 jobs are at risk if congress doesn't authorize more transportation dollars by the end of the summer. a strong showing of police officers averted what was promised to be another afternoon of violence in downtown berkeley yesterday. for the past three fridays students from area high schools have been fighting in the downtown area. this is video posted on the local news website berkeley side showing what happened last friday. about 50 officers flooded downtown streets yesterday hoping to keep the piece. >> there's been a lot of concern from the business community, our parent community. their kids are going to school and moving around. the city has contacted us. we've been in discussions all week with the police department. berkeley reports two berkeley high school students were arrested last week. one student from an oakland charter school was also arrested when he peppersprayed a crowd of teenagers. police say the violence stems from an off-campus dispute from berkeley and oakland high-schoolers. happening today the family of a missing 19 year old with a traumatic brain injury will hold a walk in golden gate park to mark the first anniversary of his disappearance. he was last seen may 21st, 2013 during a visit to his former high school on oak street. he later called his father before he disappeared. that phone call was trace today golden gate park. today's walk will follow his presume path from the school to the park. today's walk for shawn event gets underway at 12:30. bay area congressman said technology and private contractors may improve security around airports, but airports want passengers to pay for it. he sits on the homeland security committee. yesterday he featured but did not endorse six companies which make perimeter security systems. this comes after 15-year-old yaya abdi hopped a fence and stowed away on an international flight. they want passengers to pay for the increased security dollars to $4.50 to eight dollars. >> passengers pay for what they use and that money is kept locally and is reinvested back in our airport. >> the congressman wants to create a pilot program to find a way to close gaps in security. a major runway safety project that could lead to flight delays could begin today at sfo. two of the four runways will be closed through september. the airport is pouring crushable concrete at the end to prevent planes from overshooting the runways a summer closer is the fastest option for finishing the federally mandated project. >> a heads-up for drivers in the santa rosa area. highway 101 at airport boulevard will be closed tonight for bridge demolition and cleanup. both northbound and southbound 101 will close at 10:00 and not reopen until at least 6:00 a.m. also the eastbound airport boulevard on ramp will be closed from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m. the off-ramp will be closed from 10 to nine. and the westbound airport bluffed on ram many will be closed from 10:00 until 8:00. san francisco international airport is fed up with ride sharing companies. they say drivers for companies like uber, lyft and sidecar are operating at the airplane illegally and they are turning to city officials for help. >> driving travelers to and from sfo is big business. so much so that drivers for ride sharing companies are doing it general way without the proper permit. he got a stern warning from an airport officer. >> he said are you a commercial driver? i said no, i work uber. he said that's commercial. you are restricted and told me to leave. >> most have taken off the trade dress, the pink mustache, for example. they are still catching a number of drivers in violation. in a three-week period they have given warnings to 110 drivers. 101 were from uber, 7 from lyft, one from sidecar and one from wings. in a letter to the public utility commission that regulates the companies, they said the disturbing lack of compliance with requirements raised serious public safety concerns at the airport. >> we are finding drivers that have expired licenses, finding drivers with no insurance, finding drivers that don't even own the car that they are using. >> sfo said a permit would solve these problems. companies would pay a $1,000 deposit and $3.75 per ride. but uber said it's concerned with the tracking devices required for all of their vehicles, which they said violates the privacy of their drivers and passengers. it's the same technology required for taxis and limos. >> do you think they should have permits like you guys? >> definitely, yes. >> this cabdriver said everyone should be held to the same standard. >> we're required to have insurance. we pay money and they don't pay anything. it's completely different. >> changes may be on the way. the cpuc will be meeting with airport officials about the issue next month. at sfo, abc7 news. >> still ahead on the abc7 saturday morning news, ferry will make four early morning trips to the san francisco ferry terminal which is just a few blocks from the start. very convenient hopefully everyone will be may have and the weather with cooperate. >> yes, it will be pretty nice. temperatures comfortable not only in the morning but right through the afternoon. the cooling trend got underway a couple days ago but before it was confined in the shoreline. but higher clouds anybodying for a pretty start. hd doppler shows some of the clouds here. we are looking at a couple disturbances that will keep the cooling trend with us. in fact if you are headed to the sierra nevada, maybe even some showers by early next week. sutro tower, we can ponder this for a while. it continues to change and shows a beautiful start to the day today. wind gusts over 20 miles an hour. san francisco 53. the view from santa cruz, a little gray right now, but katie mentioned upper 70s today with some sunshine under the partly cloudy skies. the cool spot is in santa rosa right now. concord and livermore in the mid-50s. you will be out of the upper 80s today. a good 8 degrees cooler for you. finally our cooler air makes its way into the valleys, and from mt. tam the camera handshaking a little bit. nice looking va with the long shadows of the morning light and the marine layer. it will continue to scour out by about 11:00 and that will leave us with more sunshine and the high clouds. the winds continue at the coast. so it will be a breezy day today there. so if you are planning on coming into the city or heading out to the shoreline, it will be a windy day. in fact the winds are going to stay up there through tomorrow. an upper level disturbance has dropped southward and that has allowed for the increasing on shore flow and yet another disturbance pivots on through to begin the work week. that allows the further cooling and the possibility of maybe high elevation showers in the mountains. otherwise we are looking at temperatures today still pretty warm from yosemite. 85. 82 los angeles, but look at san diego. into the 70s with all the low cloudiness banked up along the shoreline. it retreats but still the sea breeze with us throughout the afternoon helping the firefighters. high temperatures today in the low 60s half moon bay. we finally get the temperatures down to the average about tomorrow. today 76 in san jose with 72 in richmond. some low 80s up through santa rosa and you can see it looks pretty calm now in san francisco but it will be breezy for the game later on today. 6:035, 64 degrees and the sun not setting until 8:15. tomorrow if you are planning on coming into the city early, we will have the low clouds, the fog, the gray conditions with upper 50s and then sunshine revealing itself by 11:00. 1:00 low 60s. so, yeah, really nice nice lookg morning. the accuweather seven-day forecast, it will keep cooling off in to monday. a few extra clouds there. we look at the warm trend tuesday, wednesday, into next week, it looks modest and comfortable. but for memorial day it still looks like it will be very seasonal around here with temperatures comfortable. that will give us next monday caught in the line of fire -- an 8-year-old girl is in the hospital after being shot in the neck. she was playing in her yard when bullets started flying. a man was also wounded. police don't know who the target was. it happened around 6:30 yesterday evening in oakland on 66th avenue near international boulevard. the girl was taken to shirld's hospital oakland. abc news reporter allen wong has details. police say bullets from half a block away pierced this wood fence and struck a young girl playing on the other side. >> i hear a little girl crying. >> juan garcia said he heard 10-16 shots and ran to help the girl who was bleeding badly in her front yard. >> how bad was it? >> it sounded like all i can hear. >> another man halfway down the block was also shot several dimes. but police aren't sure if he was the intended target or if he was caught in the line of fire. >> we don't have a good description. gunmen at all. >> it happened around 6:00 on 66th in this neighborhood east of international boulevard. sky 7 was overhead as officers collected evidence. >> there was at least one vehicle driving southbound in the 1800 block of 66th at least two individuals exited the vehicle and fired multiple rounds striking the victims. >> police say the few witnesses they have are not fully cooperating. in oakland, allen wong, abc7 news. police and fire crews are on alert in novato, they say an arsonist has set 13 different fires there. most were grass fires, but two were set at home in the neighborhood near south novato boulevard and redwood boulevard. abc7 news reporter have details. >> fire crews on watch. joined by five police officers on special patrol. hoping to keep a series of fires from happening again. one of them kept tracy barber up all night. >> she came over and started screaming and banging on the door. trying to get me up and saying grab the babies, got to go. >> her neighbor, nancy pollock is the one who woke her up, pollock's husband shot pictures of the fire as it was burning yards from their home. it's their normally quiet greyhound shawna who is being hailed at a hero because she started barking. >> if it wasn't for her we would have been in trouble. it spread quickly. >> the dog's early warning prompted a quick call to 911 and a prompt response by the fire department kept the grass fire on the hill from getting closer to homes. this was one of nearly a dozen fires that were burning at about the same time in novato. one of thosesinged the front door of this home. they're all bringing back terrible memories of a fire bug on the loose just two years ago in this neighborhood. this time, tracy is spooked. >> if they were to do this again, their rooms are the first ones to go and it will be too late. >> she's decided her kids will not stay overnight at home for a while. in novato, sergio quintana, abc7 news. investigators in walnut creek say four suspicious fires in a nearby park are related. the fire is in the same spot as a fire two years ago, and in the same area as three others in the past week. a fast response from cal fire crews in the south bay kept a brush fire from growing out of control. sky 7 hd was there as helicopters and planes dropped retardant on the fire which reached seven acres. it was first reported just after 4:00, between santa clara and santa cruz counties, in the mount madonna area near morgan hill. firefighters say no structures were ever in harm's way. major progress to report on efforts to put out the destructive wildfires burning in san diego county. officials say they are nearing full containment on all but two of the 11 fires that broke out this week. fires burning at camp pendleton and in the community of san marcos are still raging. but in other parts of the county, residents have been allowed to return home. >> the fire blew down through the hills, kind of jumped over, come up the back hillside, we managed to keep my mom's house and their house next door. >> yesterday, a 57-year-old man pleaded not guilty to arson charges. after he was seen adding dead brush to a fire in oceanside. also fire investigators have concluded sparks from faulty construction equipment accidentally touched off the 1200-acre rancho bernardo fire. police in antioch are investigating the death of an 18-month-old boy who drowned in a swimming pool. sky 7 hd was over the scene after the child was found in a pool on simpsondale court. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. adults were there at the time of the drowning and are interviewing everyone who was present to determine how this happened. the family of one of the two b.a.r.t. track inspectors who were hit and killed bay train last year is suing the agency. lawrence daniels' daughters accuse b.a.r.t. of being negligent when it sent him and christopher shepard to check for a dip in the tracks near the walnut creek station. both daniels and shepherd were veteran b.a.r.t. employees, the train was being operated by a trainee. this morning a san jose company is warning whoever stole a piece of equipment from one of its work trucks, what they have is radioactive. this device is used to measure soil density and moisture content. the silicon valley soil engineering company tells our media partner, the "san jose mercury news," the radioactive material in the tool is about the size of a tic-tac and surrounded by steel, but it can cause health problems if someone is directly exposed to it. walnut creek police are warning people not to be alarmed if they hear gunshots and screaming at a local school today. those sounds are part of a training exercise. at walnut creek intermediate school. the department says it's telling people ahead of time, so nobody panics and does not assume the worst today. well this is a time of year when students across the bay area are celebrating prom. last night, that rite of passage was enjoyed by students of all ages. at lucille packard children's hospital. abc7 news anchor ama dates takes us to their prom. >> reporter: boys and girls, step up to the 10th hospital prom at lucille packard children's hospital. >> basically it's kind of a cross between a take a look at this, good samaritans rescued a woman in boston after she fell on to train tracks, caught on camera the woman in white pants seems pretty oblivious to the edge of the platform and she goes over. falls hard. this happened on tuesday night. people rushed to get her up and out of the way. and luckily there was not a train coming. transit officials said she was sore, but otherwise okay. sonoma county's district attorney said she is still reviewing the shooting death of a 13-year-old santa rosa boy last october bay sheriffs deputy. according to the "press-democrat" district attorney says her office is still determining whether sonoma county deputy eric gillhouse should face criminal charges in the death of andy lopez, lopez was killed october 22nd as he walked across an avenue, carrying a b.b. gun. a former santa clara county supervisor found guilty of misusing thousands of dollars in public funds has been released from jail. our media partner, the mercury news reports george shirawkawa junior was released after seven months of a year-long sentence, he pleaded guilty to charges including corruption and gambling with public funds. he faces three years probation, during which he's not allowed to gamble and must attend counseling. this is one of the most annoying things that people experience at home -- calls from telemarketers. and it can happen even if you're on the federal do not call list. so how do you get those pesky calls to stop? here's 7 on your side's michael finney with the inside scoop on how to make that happen. schara lives in petaluma, she understands the problem of telemarketing calls, because she says she often gets more than ten a day. >> it was like i have to do something. >> fills was so aggravated, she stopped answering the phone and left a message on her answering machine. >> please leave us a message and we'll call you back promptly. this is our little effort to stop telemarketing calls. thanks. >> some are more persistent and they say, well, this is really good. you should hear this. no, please put us on your do not call list. sometimes it works. >> one of most common questions we receive here in our 7 on your side office is -- is how-day get the telemarketers to stop calling me? meet erika elson, she has worked as a telemarketer in southern california for years. and she has a few insider tips to get telemarketers to stop calling. number one -- answer the phone. >> one mistake that people commonly make is that they let telemarketers call them over and over again without picking up the phone. >> elson says that's one of the worst things can you do. >> we'll assume that you're not home. or we can call you another time. >> number two, don't hang up. >> definitely do not hang up the phone as soon as the telemarketer has identified themselves. because we'll just assume you got disconnected and we will call you back. >> number three, after answering, insist to be put on their do not call list. early in her career, elson's boss taught her about the rules. >> you don't want to let someone off the phone until they've given you three clear indications that they're not interested. >> number four, don't explain the reason you're not interested. >> you just want to clearly state the same thing, you want to repeat that you want to be put on the do not call list. >> number five, elson says keep your anger in check. >> when you get angry at them, they might take it personally and then as a way to retaliate, they'll throw you back into the pool and you'll get called again by a different person. >> number six, never give a telemarketer a reason to call you back. >> we will keep calling until you tell us not to. >> despite the fact that phyllis gets calls so companies can legally still call you. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. happening today, hundreds of local children will release more than 2,000 chinook salmon into the san francisco bay. it's the kiss and release salmon event. officials say the salmon have reached the stage where they must be released into the bay in preparation for life in the ocean. organizers say the event is meant to be a fun experience for children, while teaching them about salmon conservation. today's event runs from noon until 4:00 at blacky's pasture in tiburon. good news for san jose state students returning next year. the school has scrapped plans to increase student fees for the fall semester. instead, the school is cutting them by $100. students had protested the fee, which would have been the highest in the cal state system. administrators plan to charge almost $800 a year, but instead now students will pay about $600, the money goes to fees for courses, athletics and technology. happening today, democratic leader, nancy pelosi, will deliver the commencement address at uc berkeley's graduation ceremony. pelosi is expected to encourage the class of 2014 to stay engaged in community and public service, and urge them to be ready to challenge the status quo. today's commencement ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. it is of course at memorial stadium in berkeley. and that's how you see people clouds, breezy this afternoon. and tomorrow, the cooling trend not only throughout the day today, but tomorrow and monday is another system visits us. so the winds throughout the afternoon today will continue to be quite gusty along the coast half moon bay, pacifica, point reyes, it will be windy. oakland and livermore, 4:00 in the afternoon. we'll call it breezy, and the sea breeze spreads the cooler marine air. as much as four to eight degrees cooler around livermore. you were 88 yesterday. with high pressure close to the coast and an area of low pressure dropping to the south, that allows for the gusty winds. and the increasing sea breeze, so another disturbance pivots through early part of the week. maybe some showers or thunderstorms in the sierra nevada and allows for further has given birth to five calves, three of which still live there due to her age, she gets special care, foot massage and chiropractic care. giraffes in captivity live to be about 28 years old. a new yorkbound flight was delayed at san francisco international airport yesterday by a snake. it was a garter snake, this is what one looks like. the delta pilot reportedly announced that it was on the runway and that a worker was being sent to retrieve it. passengers live-tweeted the incident. one man quoted the pilot as saying, folks, slight to delay due do a snake on the runway. ground crew re-enter the picture tonight. a look at the cooldown further for the beginning of the work week coming up. katie. lisa, new this morning, president obama says he's heading to the baseball hall of fame to stress how tourism can lead to good-paying american jobs. in his weekly address, the president announced he'll visit the hall of fame on thursday. he said tourism is an export that can grow the u.s. economy. he's pitching to congress to spend more to modernize bridges, roads and ports. he says first-class infrastructure attracts first-class jobs. we know business owners don't seek out crumbling roads and bridges and backed-up supply chains. they set up shop where the newest, fastest, most convenient transportation and communications networks let them invent and sell goods made in america to the rest of the world as fast as possible. here's the problem -- if congress doesn't act by the end of this summer, federal funding for transportation projects will run out. >> the president warns almost 700,000 jobs are at risk if congress doesn't authorize more transportation money by the end of the summer. a strong showing of police officers averted what was promised to be another afternoon of violence in downtown berkeley yesterday. for the past three fridays, students from area high schools have been fighting in the downtown area. this is video posted on the local news website, berkeley side showing what happened last friday. about 50 officers flooded downtown streets yesterday, hoping to keep the peace. >> there's been a lot of concern from the business communities, downtown community, our parent community obviously, their kids are going to school and moving around. the city has contacted us, we've been in discussions all week with the police department. >> berkeley side reports two berkeley high school students were arrested last week. and one student from an oakland charter school was arrested when he pepper-sprayed a crowd of teenagers. police say the violence stems from an off-campus dispute between berkeley and oakland high schoolers. happening today, the family of a missing 19-year-old man with a traumatic brain injury will hold a walk in golden gate park to mark the first anniversary of his disappearance. shawn seedy was last seen may 21st 2013 during a visit to his former high school on oak street. he later called his father and then disappeared. that phone call was traced to golden gate park and today's walk will follow his presumed path from the school to the park. today's walk for shawn event gets under way at 12:30. bay area congressman eric sillwell says technology and private contractors may improve security around airports, but airports want passengers to pay for that smallwell sits on the homeland security committee and yesterday he featured, but did not endorse six companies which make perimeter security systems. this comes after 15-year-old yaya abdi hopped a fence at san jose and stowed away on a flight to hawaii. airports want congress to increase the cap for passenger facility charges from $4.50, to $8.50, which means passengers would be paying for increased security. >> local money, and passengers that use our airports, they pay for what they use. and that money is kept locally and is reinvested back in our airports. >> congressman smallwell wants to create a pilot program to find a way to close gaps in security. a major runway safety project that could lead to flight delays begins today at sfo. two of the airports' four runways will be closed through september. the airport is pouring crushable concrete at the ends to prevent planes from overshooting the runways. sfo says the summer closure is the fastest option for finishing the federally mandated project. also aheads up for drivers in the santa rosa area. highway 101 at airport boulevard will be closed tonight into tomorrow morning, for bridge demolition. and clean-up. both northbound and southbound 101 will close at 10:00 and not reopen until at least 6:00 a.m. also, the eastbound airport boulevard on-ramp will be closed from 7:00 until 10:00 a.m. southbound off-ramp to airport boulevard will be closed from 10:00 to 9:00 and the westbound airport boulevard on-ramp will be closed from 10:00 to 8:00. san francisco airport fed one ride sharing companies. they say drivers for companies like uber, list, and side car are operating at the airport illegally and now sfa is turning to state regulators for help. here's abc7 news reporter lillian kim. >> driving travelers to and from sfo is big business. so much so, that drivers for ride-sharing companies like uber, lift and side car are doing it anyway, without the proper permits. gregory bruno got a stern warning from an airport officer. >> just basically said, what are you commercial driver and i said well, no, i work for uber. he said that's commercial, you're restricted from picking up here. and told me to leave. >> many drivers have even taken off their so-called trade dress, a pink mustache for example. but sfo office remembers still catching a number of drivers in violation. in a three-week period they've given warnings to 110 drivers. 101 were from uber. one from lift and one from side car. in a letter to california public utilities commission which regulates ride-sharing companies, sfo's director wrote, the disturbing lack of compliance with cpuc requirements raises serious public safety concerns at the airport. >> we're finding drivers that have expired licenses. finding drivers with no insurance. finding drivers that don't even, don't even own the car that they're using. >> sfo says a permit would solve these problems. companies would pay $1,000 deposit and $3.75 per ride. but uber says it's concerned with the tracking devices that would be required for all of their vehicles, which it says violates the privacy of their drivers and passengers. the same technology required for taxis and limos. >> do you think they should have permits like you guys? >> this cab driver says everyone should be held to the same standard. >> you know, we're required to have insurance, whatever it is. we pay money, they don't pay anything. so it's, it's completely different. >> changes may be on the way. the cpuc will be meeting with airport officials about this issue next month. at sfo, lillian kim, abc7 news. organizers are hoping bay area residents will turn out in force today. to try and help save the life of a 7-year-old boy who is battling leukemia. baylor frederickson needs a bone marrow transplant. his parents are bay. but the cooling trend certainly felt in our east bay valleys. here's the mount tam shot. you can see the windy conditions up to 30-mile-per-hour winds above 1500 feet. we'll call it partly sunny this morning. sun and high clouds with a breezy afternoon not only today, into the second half of your weekend, and also monday as well. looking at the cooling trend, really encompassing all of us in the fact that another system is going to pivot down from this one will allow for some extra cloud cover and even maybe some mountain showers heading towards tuesday. but locally today, we'll have the sunshine, a few high clouds, and then we'll look for the next system to increase the cooling trend. today four to eight degrees cooler, another couple of degrees knocked down tomorrow. so partly cloudy in southern california and boy, they are happy about the onshore flow, the moisture air heading into san diego. helping with the fire-fighting efforts, just 75 there today, 64 in monterey. upper 80s in sacramento. so still pretty warm there. with 70 in tahoe. but the cooling trend will be headed your way, too, very windy in the sierra nevada. 72 in oakland today. with san mateo coming in about the same. palo alto, 73, san francisco 67. so temperatures coming down to near average today. but still, in the low 80s for fairfield and antioch with the breeze reaching our east bay valley. so here's the way it looks outside right now. you can see a little puff of wind out there for the game tonight. 6:05. temperatures will be in the 60s, dropping to the 60s, it will be breezy, the sun setting at 8:15. and tomorrow for bay to breakers, if you're headed into the city early morning hours, we'll have the cloud cover, and numbers in the 50s. so near perfect conditions, 59 at 9:00, low 60s, 11:00 and 1:00 will increase the sunshine. the accuweather seven-day forecast then we'll keep the winds throughout the weekend and into monday. extra cloud cover on monday, we'll look for a slow the wind die down tonight firefighters were cautiously optimistic they could prevent damage to any homes but it was burning. red flag warning is posted for most of southern california writ now. in santa barbara county brush fire burning near the town of lompoc force evacuation of 1200 homes and business and grown to 700 acres just like in san diego it was hot and windy today in that area as well. >> back up in northern california. kirk pass road in pittsburgh expected to be closed until 7 tomorrow morning after down power lines ignite add fire. it happened 5:30 tonight when car hit a the photo. he brutally stabbed a 23-year-old woman a number of times in her torso during dispute on mission district on sunday. they think he may training now to leave the country. >> we are learning some new information on what may have led to last week crash of vintage plane during an air show at travis air force base. this is video of that deadly tragedy. a preliminary report from the national transportation safety board safety board found that the pilot was making his second attempt at upside down stunt. he was supposed to be 20 feet off the ground but he was too high on the first run. 77-year-old ed died on the second attempt. >> fish wild life investigation has found no evidence that federally protected birds were killed outside post office in oakland. there were reports that some legislature has until midnight on june 15 to pass the budget. >> city of livermore expanding the mandatory water restriction. livermore is served by 2 different water utility now these restrictions now apply to customers of both limited to twice a week. water consumption cut by half in the drought. in the from nose area the blm said it will have to get raining water from the lake to supply farmers downstream. along the river with the water they leave this summer. it's the first time in a 75 year history of the central valley project they have ever had to do that. it just speaks to how
