50 years ago today, the South and part of the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys were devastated by one of the most significant weather events in U.S. history. Infamously known as the 1974 Super Outbreak, which lasted from April 3-4, 1974, the Outbreak was the first on record to produce more than 100 tornadoes in a 24-hour period. The onslaught resulted in the loss of 335 lives and $600 million in damages.

50 years later, we remember the 1974 Super Outbreak of Tornadoes.

50 years ago was one of the worst tornado outbreaks in U.S history. The Super Outbreak on April 3-4, 1974 would spawn 148 twisters and take 335 lives.

One F-5, two F-4 and two F-3 tornadoes moved through the Tri-State that day, plus a trio of weaker tornadoes.

During the Super Tornadoes on April 3, 1974, there were a record 30 F4-F5 tornadoes in six states in a 24-hour period, including a F5 that practically destroyed the nearby town of Xenia, Ohio.

Fifty years after the Super Tornado Outbreak of April 3-4, 1974 the twisters are still vivid in survivors' minds. It was the "worst tornado outbreak in United States history," according to the NWS.
