From next year select European and Japanese scientists will be able to use each other’s supercomputers, as part of a deal that could lead to faster scientific simulations in areas such as climate and materials science and help design the next generation of machines in the EU. It’s the latest effort by Brussels to cosy up to Tokyo in research and technology, as the EU looks to build better ties with fellow democracies, particularly in the aftermath of the invasion of Ukraine.

Today, France’s Eviden (part of cybersecurity, cloud, and high-performance computing group Atos) and German modular supercomputing company ParTec, announced they had won a contract to provide the very first exascale supercomputer in Europe.

EuroHPC JU and a French-German supercomputer consortium comprising of Eviden and ParcTec have signed a contract for the construction of JUPITER. JUPITER will be the first exascale supercomputer in Europe and hosted at Forschungszentrum Jülich in the German state of North Rhine Westphalia. The system, designed for largest possible simulations and AI applications in science and industry alike, is expected to launch in 2024.
