A Thibodaux teacher arrested by federal immigration agents last month has been released from custody, his attorney said.
Djibril Coulibaly, 50, who teaches French at W.S. Lafargue Elementary School in Thibodaux, was taken into custody Dec. 15 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and was transported to a detention center in Evangeline Parish to await deportation.
Following an outcry by supporters and a flurry of letters, emails to lawmakers, online petitions and media coverage, ICE released Coulibaly from the Pine Prairie Processing Center Thursday morning, his attorney Hiroko Kusuda said.
Though Coulibaly is elated to have been released, he also contracted the coronavirus while he was incarcerated, Kusuda said.
