Attendees discussed long-term solutions for cliff erosion, erratic college student behavior and the balance between enforcing safe solutions and not interfering with oceanside views

After a third person fell to their death in three years the community gathered Monday to voice concerns about health, safety, and challenges with landlords while living near the Isla Vista bluffs.

Attendees primarily discussed housing and safety issues in Isla Vista as well as in the district as a whole.

Santa Barbara County announced Thursday that Supervisor Laura Capps will host an Isla Vista housing and safety listening session for tenants and students in the aftermath of recent bluff fatality on Monday, April 29.

Isla Vista Community Services District (IVCSD), Santa Barbara County Parks Department staff and other community leaders joined Capps to speak on the progress and completed improvements to ensure bluff safety.

There is an active evacuation in the 6700 block of Del Playa in Isla Vista due to bluff erosion.

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors convened on Nov. 7 and unanimously passed Supervisor Laura Capps’ Isla Vista bluff safety plan. Capps’ eight-step plan details proposed safety measures to ensure increased precaution be taken around the cliffs in I.V. The plan includes regulating fence heights, lighting, warning signs, cliff-side bathrooms, horticulture and promoting cliff
