The rescue of a badly injured surfer off a remote beach near Karekare has won Rescue of the Year at Surf Life Saving Northern Region’s annual Awards of Excellence in Auckland on Saturday (subs: 17 July).
The Award was presented jointly to United North Piha Lifeguard Service (UNPLS) and the Piha Paid Lifeguard Service whose lifeguards combined to effect the rescue on 17 February this year.
Lifeguards at the two clubs were alerted to the surfer’s plight by members of the public who had spotted him from a walking track above the beach at Mercer Bay writing “HELP” in the sand before collapsing. The Patrol Captain at UNPLS immediately tasked the Rescue Water Craft (RWC) to respond, and requested a crew member from Piha SLSC, to ensure both patrols continued to operate unaffected.

The Award was announced at the SLSNR Awards of Excellence in Auckland on 17 July.
Waipū Cove Surf Life Saving Club’s Coast Watchers network comprises spotters at key vantage points along Bream Bay, who assist the club’s local Emergency Call Out Squad (ECOS).
The community members were provided induction training on spotting possible people in trouble, informing the ECOS team, providing updates until the rescuers arrive, and what information needs to be given to the emergency services team.

Surf Life Saving Northern Region (SLSNR) will be honouring its best and bravest again this July.
After COVID-19 forced an online, truncated Awards of Excellence last year, a return to relative normality is welcome, says SLSNR CEO Matt Williams. “Last year was busy and challenging for our volunteers and staff in a lot of ways and we missed that opportunity to meet as a region, reflect on a great year’s work and celebrate the achievements and individual successes, and the many lives saved through our actions.”
