CONNECTICUT, USA It was nearly a year ago that George Floyd s name spread across America after millions of people watched ex-Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin place his knee on the Black man s neck for nearly nine minutes.
On Tuesday, April 19, a jury found Chauvin guilty of murder and manslaughter for the death of Floyd.
The reaction began to pour in across the country for Floyd and his family as Chauvin was taken away in handcuffs by bailiffs.
“It was very important that his fellow officers, that his superiors, came and testified that this is not policing at all,” said DeBeatham-Brown. A Minnesota jury found former police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd.
Mayor DeBeatham-Brown and Town Manager Philip Schenck say they’re proposing hiring a social worker to assist police and that it’s important to continue conversations about police training, de-escalation techniques, and community policing.
“We need to make sure police can do their job, but we need to make sure there’s fairness in doing their job,” said DeBeatham-Brown.
Most towns will have local elections later this year.
Channel 3 spoke with one organization about how it is trying to recruit new faces to run for office.
âTo envision where youâve never really seen yourself is scary,â said Bloomfield Mayor Suzette Debeatham-Brown.
