Amid mounting tensions, U.S. Government reported to be working on evacuation plans for Americans in Taiwan.

Taiwan was struck by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake, causing a convenience store to collapse and trapping hundreds on mountain roads.

China-Taiwan updates: The new drills come less than a fortnight after Beijing launched unprecedented war games in retaliation to US House Speaker Pelosis visit to Taiwan, sparking fears of a Chinese invasion of the breakaway island.

China responded to Pelosis visit by sending missiles, warships and warplanes into the seas and air around Taiwan.

Taiwan's foreign ministry has thanked the United States for maintaining security in the Taiwan Strait.

Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi became the highest-ranking American diplomat to visit Taiwan in a quarter of a century.

China earlier announced that military exercises by its navy, air force and other departments were underway in six zones surrounding Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own territory to be annexed by force if necessary.

The Chinese offensive on Taiwan follows US House of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recently concluded visit to the island nation.

Taiwanese government websites were hacked by Chinese activist hackers ahead of U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s arrival in Tapei on Tuesday. “It continues for a few days, but they often lose interest within a week,” says authorities.
