DEC: Hunters killed more than 1,700 black bears during 2020 seasons

Mike Murling, of Verona, N.Y., shot this black bear in Osceola in Lewis County on Oct. 17, 2020 with his muzzleloader. It was an 80-90 yard shot from the ground, he said. He estimated it weighed about 500 pounds, adding that it dresssed out at 433 pounds.

New York State bear hunters killed a total of 1,723 black bears during the 2020 hunting seasons, according to the state Department of Environmental
The greatest number of bears taken on any one day was 116 on Sept. 12, the opening day of the early bear season in the Southern Zone, according to the DEC’s 2020 Bear Harvest Summary.
