Of the more than 44,000 people in the United States who died by suicide in 2020, 6,146 were veterans. And on a single night in January of this year, there were 33,136 veterans experiencing homelessness.
Data released in September by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services showed the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline saw a 45% increase in the overall volume of calls, texts and chats in August of this year the first full month the three-digit number was in place compared to August 2021.
