THANJAVUR Farmers in delta districts are a worried a lot as many say they see indications for delay in opening of shutters of Stanley Reservoir well beyond the scheduled date of June 12.
The farmers, at the outset, were hopeful that their views would be factored in by the government for deciding on the water release schedule for Kuruvai and Samba cultivation while attending a recent meeting attended by senior State Ministers.
However, the farmers were a little disappointed when they were told at the meeting that the decision on the date of the opening of Mettur dam would be finalised and announced by the Chief Minister M.K.Stalin on a later date.

Officials must ensure transparency regarding crop loan waiver in primary agricultural cooperative societies, said farmers here on Friday.
Raising the issue at the farmers’ grievance redress meeting here on Friday, P. Ayyakannu, president, Desiya Thennindia Nadigal Inaippu Vivasayigal Sangam, alleged irregularities in the waiver and urged the Collector to instruct the cooperative societies to put up the list of beneficiaries.

With the storage at the Mettur reservoir remaining above the 100 feet mark, farmers representatives in Tiruchi district have appealed to the State government to ensure release of adequate water to meet the requirements of standing cash crops such as banana, sugarcane and betelvine till May. At present, about 1,500 cusecs of water was being discharged from Mettur to meet the drinking water requirements of towns and cities downstream.
Farmers are now demanding that the quantum of release be sustained through the non-Mettur season to irrigate banana, betelvine, and sugarcane crops that are irrigated by the 17 irrigation canals running between Mettur dam and Kallanai.

The Tamilnadu Vivasayigal Sangam has demanded that the crop loans re-structured during 2017 also be covered under the ₹12,110 crore waiver scheme announced by the Chief Minister Edappadi K.Palanisamy under Rule 110 on the floor of the State Legislative Assembly recently.
In a press release, its State deputy secretary P.S.Masilamani expressed resentment over the circular issued on February 9 to cooperative institutions stating that the crop loans re-structured in view of the crop loss suffered by the farmers due to drought would not be considered for the waiver under the present scheme.

Farmer staged protests in different parts of Tiruchi, Perambalur, Pudukkotai and Thanjavur districts on Saturday.
A group of farmers led by P.Ayyakannu, president of Desiya Thennindiya Nathigal Inaippu Vivasayigal Sangam, blocked the traffic at Salai Road-Sastri Road junction here. Some of them carried ploughs. They raised slogans against the Centre. The police detained 54 persons. The protest disrupted the traffic for about 45 minutes.
Twenty farmers were taken into custody when they staged a road roko at Manaparai. V. Chidambaram, district secretary, Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, led the protest. Terming the farm laws anti-farmers, they urged the Centre to withdraw them immediately.
