Labour won control of councils in England that the party hasn't held for decades, and was successful in a special election for a seat in Parliament.

With dozens of local authorities facing bankruptcy, a collapse in teacher recruitment, an unprecedented level of teacher resignations, collapsing school buildings, an acceleration of the academies and free schools programme and a witch hunt against teachers opposing the Gaza genocide, both unions went on the stump for Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer as saviour.

There is a growing sentiment in favour of a genuine left-wing alternative. But the aim of the various electoral fronts and initiatives is to limit workers to one of two dead end alternatives: pressuring the Labour Party to the left, above all to back a ceasefire in Gaza, or at some point forming a new “left” party modelled on Labour and hopefully led by its former leader Jeremy Corbyn.

You could almost hear the gale-force sigh of relief when Lee Anderson made his heartfelt yet blundering remarks about Islamists having control of Mayor Sadiq Khan, of London “and of Starmer as well”. It was exactly the excuse the powers that be needed to change the subject.
