RRW: BYU Women, NAU Men Take Team Titles at NCAA Cross Country Championships

(15-Mar) — At today’s pandemic-delayed NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the women of Brigham Young and the men of Northern Arizona were decisive winners in the team competition with 96 and 60 points, respectively, while the individual titles went to Mercy Chelangat of Alabama and Connor Mantz of Brigham Young. These championships –held in warm, sunny and windy weather just two days after the completion of the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas– were originally scheduled for November 21, 2020, and had never before been held in the winter. A total of 253 women and 237 men finished today’s races.

NAU Wins The Men’s Cross Country National Championship Monday
The NAU Lumberjacks men’s cross country team won another national championship Monday in Stillwater, Oklahoma. NAU finished with 60 points, which is the lowest score in a national title race since 2005. Conner Mantz from BYU was the individual champion, however for NAU, freshman Nico Young finished fourth, senior Blase Ferro was sixth, sophomore Abdihamid Nur was seventh and senior Luis Grijalva was ninth. This is the fourth national championship for NAU in men’s cross country in five years. The Jacks finished 27 points better than Notre Dame and 82 points better than host Oklahoma State. Defending national champion BYU was seventh and Big Sky rival Southern Utah was ninth. The NAU women’s team finished 11th in the women’s national meet. NAU was in the top-five for most of the race, then tailed off toward the end. Junior Taryn O’Neill finished in sixth place for NAU. BYU won the team national title in the women’s race.
