War to secure American Independence was fought by young men

She and her DAR colleagues spread the wealth, being sure to recognize every branch of our armed forces, to include the Guard, Reserve and family members. And, June is particularly inclusive when it comes to the wide range of wartime (and peacetime!) eras which the robust Lake and Sumter veteran community represents. The majority of Continental Soldiers were young men between the ages of 15 to 30, she told me.  Maybe that s why the DAR is just as keen on lending a hand to Service recruiters or stirring up support for returning Afghanistan or Iraq vets as they are about supporting local school teachers with materials and speakers lest we forget names like Bunker Hill, Yorktown and Valley Forge.

Armed Forces Day gaining steam since its creation in 1949

Melbourne was the setting last weekend for the Florida Air Show, billed as an Armed Forces Day event and featuring the Navy s famed Blue Angels. A small party from Lake County had the privilege of enjoying the show a day early, sans traffic, in the company of a Blue Angel alumnus, retired Cmdr. Wayne Molnar (the SALUTE page s Veteran Profile in the Daily Commercial s March 7 edition). Col. Riccoh Player, a former Pentagon public affairs officer, said that Armed Forces Day was created in 1949 to replace separate Service celebrations.  And major venues across the nation, and smaller communities as well, have injected their own local and regional color and tradition in some very creative ways over the years, he said.

Jacksonville an important stop for would-be Marines

We will fight our country s battles, the Marines Hymn assures us in song, in the air, on land and sea. But 245 years of USMC history points to other successes where strafing enemy positions and planting the American flag on some desolate, war-savaged hill was not required. America s Corps of Marines guarded the U.S. mail in 1921; they earned the name Sea Angels in Tsunami-clobbered Bangladesh in 1992; and they have fought forest fires out West on a number of occasions in the last three decades.  And at this writing, busloads of incoming recruits anxiously await their turn on Parris Island s feared and fabled yellow footprints – which will happen only after two weeks cautious COVID testing in Jacksonville, where the Palm Coast and its legendary civilian-military partnership put together the means to feed, house and process a few hundred almost Marines.
