FRANKFORT, Ky. (KT) – About 350 members of a Kentucky Army National Guard unit will be heading overseas where they will be participating in two separate missions with their counterparts

Troops from Virginia will be deployed to Africa to provide a security force for the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa.

More than 1,000 Virginia and Kentucky Army National Guard soldiers have officially begun federal active duty to provide security in Africa.

BEDFORD --The Virginia National Guard’s Lynchburg-based 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team was deployed Saturday after a sendoff ceremony at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford.

The Kentucky National Guard Bravo Company, 1st - 149th Infantry, is being deployed to Djibouti, in the Horn of Africa. 

Task Force Red Dragon is the largest task force the Virginia National Guard has deployed since World War II.
