Gov. Glenn Youngkin on Saturday recognized 270 Virginia National Guard soldiers in Lynchburg for their recent federal active duty in Africa as part of Task Force Red Dragon.

For 11 months over 1 thousand soldiers in the Virginia National Guard served in the Horn of Africa. They were the biggest American presence in Africa in decades.

            The National D-Day Memorial wasn't open to the public until 2 p.m. but it was packed with nearly 900 soldiers and more than 3,500 family and friends of the soldiers. Buses that brought the soldiers and would take them off to Roanoke lined the circle around the Memorial. The morning was cold and a bit breezy, but it was bright and sunny.

Task Force Red Dragon is the largest task force the Virginia National Guard has deployed since World War II.
