Our recommended books this week offer revisionist views of a couple of historical figures: In “The Invention of Miracles,” her biography of the often-lionized Alexander Graham Bell, the writer Katie Booth takes a dim view of his efforts to eradicate deafness and its culture, while in “The Bomber Mafia,” Malcolm Gladwell looks favorably on the much-criticized Gen. Curtis LeMay and his ruthless Japanese bombing campaign late in World War II. We also like a posthumous essay collection from the beloved travel writer Jan Morris and a new graphic memoir from the brilliant Alison Bechdel that explores her obsession with physical fitness, along with a lot of fiction: story collections by John Lanchester and Te-Ping Chen, and new novels from Rachel Cusk, Helen Oyeyemi, Ben Hopkins and J. Robert Lennon.

Guide to the 2021 Virtual Gaithersburg Book Festival
Another year, another Gaithersburg Book Festival (GBF). But for the second year in a row, the festival will operate virtually.
Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman, the founder of the popular event, spoke to MyMCM about what to expect at this year’s Virtual Gaithersburg Book Festival:
The Virtual Gaithersburg Book Festival begins Saturday, May 1 and there will be activities for four consecutive weeks. All author discussions (listed below) will premiere on the GBF’s YouTube page. Most programs are prerecorded, but authors will participate in the YouTube Premiere chat discussions.
The first two weeks of programming will be geared toward adults and the final two weeks of programming are aimed at children and young adults.

LIBRARY OPEN
• The Lima Public Library has reopened. Main library hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Branch hours are noon to 6 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays, except Lafayette is closed Wednesdays.
• The main library has curbside pick up. Hours are 2 to 6 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Call 567-712-5239, contact the library through Facebook Messenger or put a hold on a book through the online catalog. Give workers 24 hours to gather. Park near the main entrance. Call when you arrive, and your items will be brought out.
