ALGIERS, Algeria – (AA) Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune signed a decree Thursday ordering early parliamentary elections set for June 12.
Last month, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune dissolved the National People's Assembly, the lower house of the parliament, and called the early parliamentary election in an attempt to calm down protests in the country.
Article 151 of the Algerian Constitution stipulates that elections be organized within a maximum period of 3 months in the event that the People's National Assembly is dissolved. The deadline can be extended for 3 more months in case it is deemed impossible to organize elections upon approval by the Constitutional Court.
Algeria President Tebboune dissolves lower house of parliament, calls early elections
Algiers, Feb 19 (UNI) Algeria President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced the dissolution of the parliament's lower house and called snap legislative elections.
"I made a decision to dissolve the National House of Representatives (the lower house). We will immediately move toward elections so that (the parliament will be) free of finances — be it corrupt money or not," Tebboune said during an address to the nation, as broadcast on Algerian television.
According to the president, the youth will have an opportunity to enter the parliament.
Tebboune also announced plans for a government reshuffle in the next few days, adding that several ministries have shown poor performance.
