Tech Corner: The Google Nest Hub is a real step forward | JOE is the voice of Irish people at home and abroad

That’s it. I’m done. No more talk about my coffee from now on. Google’s second-generation Nest Hub smart display is doing its utmost to keep Amazon at bay by introducing some neat new features. One thing I did not see coming in the era of wearable fitness trackers was the introduction of a sleep tracking feature of the Nest Hub. It’s effective and found it was mostly in line with what my smartwatch was telling me, although in general I believe fitness trackers are generous with the amount of time they say you sleep. But yes, it’s a rather unusual addition to introduce a non-wearable sleep tracker into your bedroom.

The Weekspot podcast: Outer Wilds DLC, Microsoft Store developer split, Insurmountable review,

Published on 4 May, 2021 News, reviews, a silly quiz that usually makes two men very cross: The PC Gaming Weekspot is RPS weekly podcast that recaps the last seven days in PC gaming. I don t need to remind you how good Outer Wilds was. Two years ago, everyone was raving about the 22-minute time loop. The most incredible video games website in the world even declared it the bestest best game of the year. So, of course, Headlines & Hot Takes was full of chat on what exactly the rumoured Outer Wilds DLC might turn out to be. If Echoes Of The Eye is happening, it s fair to say that anything we can dream up will pale in comparison to what the big brains at Mobius Digital make. As well as that, we chat about Microsoft s aim to deliver a top-tier PC version of Halo Infinite and their plans to give developers a larger take of games sold on the Microsoft Store. And Tech Corner obviously focuses on Sega s choice to get into the NFT game.

Tech Corner: Stylish and retro photos from home | JOE is the voice of Irish people at home and abroad

So it’s no surprise there’s been an increase in demand for retro tech as well, although I’m hesitant to name too many things as retro for fear of offending, well… anyone. Not too sound too w nkery, but analogue is more human. Prone to flaws, the same as everyone in this world. We can emphasise with the medium and it provides a momentary trip back through time. Although we recently spoke about smartphone printers and their advantages – and there clearly are advantages to them – but they can also lack the charm that instant cameras have in spades.

Tech Corner: Who needs headphones when you ve got these sunglasses? | JOE is the voice of Irish people at home and abroad

In the space of about three to four years, wireless earbuds have gone from a relative rarity to a common accessory to go along with some kind of fitness tracker and increasingly large smartphones. Is the next big conversion going to be to audio sunglasses? Over the past couple of years, both sunglasses companies and tech brands have started to find new ways to integrate the latest audio technology into sunglasses. There’s loads of options out there including ones from Bose and Ray-Ban, but for this week’s Tech Corner I’m having a look at Huawei’s - pricey - venture into the field with the Huawei X Gentle Monster Eyewear. As this is quite a mouthful, henceforth I will refer to them as the ‘Huawei X’.

Tech Corner: UV sanitise your phone while its charging | JOE is the voice of Irish people at home and abroad

Another form of technology is also being utilised, although it can hardly be called new. Ultraviolet light is being used in disinfection with many devices available on the market to sanitise your phone, keys and other small items that you frequently use. A company has brought out a version of this which is also a wireless phone charger so I’ve been using Lexon’s Oblio wireless charger and UV cleaner to see what all the fuss is about. It’s shaped like a vase that you can drop your phone into and as soon as it detects the phone, the sanitising cycle begins and takes around 20 minutes to complete, all while the phone charges wirelessly.
