Oliver Berg/picture alliance via Getty Images As the web turns 32 this Friday, its creator Tim Berners-Lee has used his annual letter to draw attention to the way the digital divide affects young people around the world. While we might assume young people now grow up as digital natives, Berners-Lee pointed to a 2020 report from the International Telecommunication Union, which points out that one third of young people around the world don t have access to the internet. Even when young people are able to get online, they are sometimes be forced off of platforms based on their negative experiences especially girls and those who belong to minority groups. The consequences of this affect everyone, said Berners-Lee.

According to Berners-Lee and Leith, who co-founded the World Wide Web Foundation to advance the open web as a public good and a basic right, funding for network infrastructure, subsidies and support for community networks makes it entirely possible to provide internet access to all young people.
