Suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle. That was june 14th my birthday 1807. Well, good morning. That was the president speaking at his Campaign Event on friday or actually saturday in florida. Just a little context for that quote, though. The Washington Post and others have noted when president Thomas Jefferson wrote that letter, he was imbittered by reports of political opponents that are spreading newspaper stories that he was sleeping with sally hemmings, one of his slaves. Today, most historians believe she was the mother of six of his children and months before the Constitutional Convention and throughout his entire career, jeffersons actual view of newspapers, quite different. In fact, right before the Constitutional Convention when they were debating what role newspapers when the media should have, Thomas Jefferson wrote, were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, i should not hesitate a m
Good afternoon, everyone. Welcome to the lead. Im jake tapper. White House Press Secretary sean spicer just wrapped up his press briefing where he spoke more indepth about President Trumps decision to withdraw federal protection for transgender students. Cnns sara murray is at the white house for us. Sara, spicer was pressed on whether this decision was in any way a civil rights issue. Reporter thats right, jake. Its a question that the white House Press Secretary repeatedly dodged. He was asked if this issue allowing transgender students to choose whichever bathroom they feel most comfortable in is a civil rights issue. He repeatedly refused to answer that question saying its a states rights issue. He was also asked what the president s personal belief is on this. Remember the president said Caitlyn Jenner would be free to use whichever bathroom in trump tower. Spicer said the president has been clear on that but he did not elaborate on what that means. And, sara, earlier today there
The department of justice and department of education paves the way for an open and include sieve process to at thattic place at the local level and input from students and teachers. It rolls back the directives. This does not mean that students dont have any rights or means to protect themselves from bullying or discrimination. Theres also news on the travel restrictions. Reporter right, we had been expecting a new travel ban from the administration. The one they ruled out had been blocked out by the court. Now we are being told by an Administration Official that its not going to be coming until next week. Maybe early in the week. Maybe midweek, and sean spicer earlier today in his briefing said essentially, this new executive order is done. Theyre just finalizing the guidance to the agencies. It seems like they do want to make sure that when they roll this within out they have dotted all the is and crossed all the ts. Thats something that was not done on the first ban which caused wi
Pg e learned a tragic lesson we can never forget. This gas pipeline ruptured in san bruno. The explosion and fire killed eight people. Pg e was convicted of six felony charges including five violations of the u. S. Pipeline safety act and obstructing an ntsb investigation. Pg e was fined, placed under an outside monitor, given five years of probation, and required to perform 10,000 hours of community service. We are deeply sorry. We failed our customers in san bruno. While an apology alone will never be enough, actions can make pg e safer. And thats why weve replaced hundreds of miles of gas pipeline, adopted new Leak Detection technology that is onethousand times more sensitive, and built a stateoftheart gas operations center. We can never forget what happened in san bruno. Thats why were working every day to make pg e the safest Energy Company in the nation. Welcome back. This week the Trump White House faces, as weve seen, crises, threats, highstakes meetings with allies and enemies
Live claritin clear. Every day. Welcome back. This week the Trump White House faces as weve seen, crises, threats, high stakes meeting with allies and enemies around the groeb with russia, syria, north korea to name a few. Earlier this evening i spoke to congressman dan donovan a new york republican representing staten island. He sits on Foreign Affairs and Homeland Security committees. And i started out by asking him about the president and whether unpredictability is actually a foreign policy. I dont know if its so much unpredictability as it is reacting to circumstances that occur, like the attacks in syria, whats going on in now. The commander in chief of our armed forces, the president has the ability and the responsibility of taking action when he sees it necessary. At sometimes he has to consult with congress. At times he just has to inform congress. I think what weve been seeing recently is his rction to what is happening throughout the world. Hes also learning that the busines
