one of those forces wins throughout the season, neil. >> neil: you know, you're scary smart. there's smart and scary start. have a good weekend. on that, let's go to katie byrne, the multimedia journalist for fox. we have the different temperature all over the country. in the northeast, they've been dealing with the heat. what can you tell us, katie? >> well, it's sticky out here. it's so hot that some kids in philly have an early start to the weekend. the school district decided on an early dismissal from 90 schools because they don't have a.c. or need electrical updates. some people are soaking up the sun today because they know there's a big temperature swing coming for us. tomorrow it will be 20 degrees cooler. so when you look at the hot spots in the northeast where the heat has broken records, a number of them broke in baltimore, poughkeepsie,
birmingham, you will make it to the 50s. check out denver remember a couple of days ago when we were talking about a 70-degree temperature swing in denver with the arctic air pushing in we have rebounded. we're back into the low 60s. it gives you an indication where we are going to go temperatures will end up in the 70s in the deep south. earlier today they were dealing with freeze watches and warnings the northeast, buffalo, new york city, we will get back into the 50s. and it will happen just in time for this upcoming holiday weekend. that's good news there the whole eastern half of the country will be warmer than average. then we turn our attention the next couple of days to this next storm system impacting folks on the west coast the pacific storm is working onshore. this is one of a couple we will see move in. the bpwbig picture with this is there is heavy rain and we could see the potential for flooding along the coast. it will work into the intermountain region and bring the potential for heavy snowfall
for two nights these groups now apparently seeing each other as new family, able to spend some time with new loved ones on the holidays so a sign of hope coming out of buffalo. but no question this is a community that is devastated and has a long road of cleanup ahead. chris. >> jesse, thank you for that so, angie, a lot of that is about these bitter cold temperatures having grown up on lake erie, i know what lake-effect snow is. but it was cold this past week and some of the winds, the way they were howling were actually scary. how is it looking now? >> a lot better in both those regards. the temperatures are on a rebound. we will see nem improve dramatically the next couple days to the point where many folks will be 20, 30 degrees above normal a big temperature swing. the arctic air is in place for the eastern half of the country. cincinnati, well below normal coming into the mid-30s today.
how dangerous are these conditions? >> it doesn't take long to get frostbite. the national weather service highlighting 45 below is the exposed wind temperature on your skin and takes five minutes to get frostbite. we have realized these numbers and some for places like castor, wyoming a wind chill reading of negative 76 degrees this morning and the advisories stretch from the north all the way to the gulf of mexico. some places like jackson, mississippi will stay below freezing for the next three days. more of the same for birmingham as well as houston and dallas. not only do you want to protect your family and yourselves as you step outside but also your home. cover your pipes if you can tonight. in atlanta you have a huge temperature swing coming your way within the next six hours as our cold front settles in. nashville to atlanta, your temperatures will drop get this 30 degrees in the coming hours. >> some of the numbers just extraordinary. thank you very much. again, even those who are not
we want to head now to denver where temperatures plummeted overnight and wind chills are 13 degrees below zero right now. that's where we find lucy cavanaugh. good morning to you. how are people holding up after some record drops in temperature there? >> reporter: yeah, don. good morning to you. not a great morning considering how painful it is to be standing out here. we did consider trying to find folks to ask them how that your holding up but thankfully most people seem to be heeding the advice of authority and staying out of this terrible, bitter cold. now colorado is used to cold winters. we're used to snow, we're used to the temperatures dropping but of course the swiftness with which this arctic blast came barrelling through was just remarkable we're talking about a 75-degree temperature swing from roughly 50 degrees on wednesday when i was on air to minus 24 degrees thursday morning and those numbers don't do justice to how it actually feels to the human body, to the skin outside.
