Last week, weather delays caused an unexpected â albeit, brief â closure to the public of the Solid Waste Transfer Station in Copperas Cove.
Though the delays were at the Temple Landfill, where the city of Copperas Cove takes its trash, some residents who normally visit the station to dump their waste, would have been turned away for what amounted to two and a half days.
What would happen if the Temple Landfill unexpectedly closed for an extended period of time?
City officials said there is a plan for that, should the situation arise.
âIf something like that was to happen, we have the ability to work with other regional landfills to take our refuse there,â said Cove City Manager Ryan Haverlah on Tuesday afternoon.
The Temple Landfill saw delays in processing solid waste Monday and Tuesday following days of rain and a 30 increase in volume seen over the past six months.
Waste Management, the company that operates the landfill, said in a statement Wednesday that they have since solved the issue and the facility is back to normal operations. Officials said the problems at the facility occurred on Monday and lasted until noon on Tuesday.
Company spokeswoman Lisa Doughty said rain locally contributed to a slowdown in operations as employees needed to stay safe in the muddy environment.
âSafety at the Temple Landfill is our No. 1 priority,â Doughty said. âTo ensure our employees and customers are safe in wet-weather conditions, we slow down the operation. When you combine the large volumes of waste and the impact of wet weather in the working face area, you naturally have longer wait times to dispose of waste.â
City of Temple Cancels Garbage Collection Until Further Notice
Trash collection in Temple has been cancelled until further notice.
The City of Temple has decided to wait it out before sending crews out to collect garbage and recycling. A smart move as nobody should be out on the icy road conditions in Central Texas.
The Temple Landfill will also remain closed until further notice as well.
Temple had hoped to resume collection today but opted to wait for safer road conditions.
Killeen, Copperas Cove, and Belton have also cancelled trash collection, which is expected to resume next week. (It s safe to assume that your town will be postponing trash collection until the roads are thawed and passable.)
