I want to show you some books that we have in our collection that were very special to Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln whenraham he was elected president in 1860, its not as if he was entirely unknown. He was a four term member of the legislature. He had served a term in congress. He was one of the most prominent politicians from the state of illinois. In large part, that popularity was due to his very successful debates against stephen a douglas, sitting senator on the democratic side in 1858. Abraham lincoln challenged him in illinois for that senate seat. They debated. Onee hourlong public debate several different occasions during that campaign season. First order of business, and hell probably start to roll back some of what president obama did. Obviously, the congress is poised to repeal obamacare. There was a report, i guess, early last week, about 178,000 jobs that would be lost in pennsylvania and a doubling of the state budget as a result of that. I think the changes that are needed to obamacare, which are both branding and substantive are probably appropriate. Completely removing the bill before theres something to replace it strikes me as very shortsighted, and we should remember that there were no public hearings held in the process of creating obamacare. The republicans in congress and the president would be wise to engage the American Public in a debate about the future of a segment of the economy which represents 18 of gdp.
