we begin with the republican s furious assault on president obama s health care reform law and equally determined backlash. mitt romney faced it today going off script after some prolonged boog interrupted his speech before the naacp convention in houston. jim acosta is standing by in the hall right now. jim, show our viewers, tell our viewers, what happened in houston. reporter: wolf, naacp leaders told cnn they praised mitt romney for showing what they called courage in coming to this convention today. but safe to say mitt romney did not hide his positions on issues that are dear to the civil rights group. and members of the naacp did not hide their feelings about mitt romney. honorable mitt romney this morning is our speaker. [ applause ] reporter: at first the applause for mitt romney at the naacp was polite. but that did not last long. when the gop contender pledged to get the national debt under control in part by repealing the president s health care law, the cro
afghanistan. and as it turns out, this is a secret program we re about to tell you about that nobody had really known about where certain portions of afghanistan are in such dire straits, where it s so unsafe. apparently, what they ll do is the nato people will go in and they ll go, ok, listen, taliban or other terrorists out there. we need your help. we will release some of the people we are holding, some surgeons at the parwan detention center, the only prison run by the united states in afghanistan. we will use those people as bargaining chips where we ll give them back to you provided they promise they re going to get out of the terror business, if you simply will keep the area safe. and apparently, they re doing it. you re forgetting, steve, they have to promise to not do anything violent against us. so as long as these and by the way, these are the worst of the worst. terrorists in afghanistan.
the northern portion of libya, is this just another attempt by qaddafi to stay in power and could he eventually turn to terrorism like the 1988 pan am bombing? cliff bay from the foundation for the defense of democracy joins us live from d.c. hey, cliff. good morning, steve. so qaddafi famously retired from the terrorism business but now his back is up against the wall and people in the united states are wondering, could he come back into the terror business again? very easy for him to come out of retirement and get back into the terrorist business. i think what we definitely know is that qaddafi will do anything to stay in power and that if he does survive, he will want revenge and that if he does think he s going down, he won t go gently. sure. well, if he doesn t go gently, what could he do? if we ve got him in a box and he can t move i suppose he could pick up the phone and pick up
the president already said qaddafi has to go. and now the u.n says we will try to give you the means, short of ground troops. it will have to be air, but we can do that. will we let a stalemate happen? can we afford to let a stalemate happen? basically what you would be talking about is a partition libya where the rebels hold the east and qaddafi gets the west. it would give qaddafi access to oil revenue. if he gets the revenue he will behave in a very bad way. we have gotten to the point where qaddafi has to go because he owes nobody anything, and he will get back into the terror business. kim, you wrote a column this week called president present which is his many votes of present in the illinois state senate. you suggest there is a political calculation on some of these issues like libya and the budget fight here and in washington. explain that.
national security adviser stephen hadley and ali errishi. before we go any further, this is a bad guy, we get it. he s bombing and killing his own people and yet both of you willing had dealings with him. you as part of the bush administration when it opened relationships with moammar gadhafi. why? we know he s been a bad guy for four decades, so why deal with him? well, it was a very difficult decision, but what we got for being willing to resume relations with libya is that he gave up his weapons of mass destruction, his nuclear program, his chemical weapon program. that s all all that hardware is now in the united states. he also provided compensation to the victims of care. he got out of the terror business. it was a difficult decision. yes, he did. i think the wisdom of what we
