They watched as debris flew around them and that big rig come barreling toward them. It just seemed like it didnt stop. So when it was over, im sitting there not knowing if im dead or alive. Reporter jake and his two coworkers survive the crash on route 222 in maidencreek township, but theyre not sure how. A big rig slammed into their car and eight others early this morning. The sound is something ill never get out of my head. I just dont know how im going to deal with that. Reporter roger sat in the back seat and saw the tractor trailer hit two cars on the highway then veer toward them. He asked that we not show his face. Then the crunching and the screeching, the metal and the glass and everything was just it wouldnt stop. Reporter the impact mangled the car below them and a silver suv above them. South on route 222. Police say hes asleep at the wheel. The truck driver was barreling southbound, captured on this video seconds before impact. Police say he was asleep, then wakes up and tries to slam on the brakes but its too late. Two people are dead, nine people injured. The truck driver walked away without so much as a broken bone. But it is clear that he dozed off and it is clear he was driving too fast. Reporter officials are now charging 50yearold steven bernier, he was working the overnight shift hauling material for cougle recycling out of hamburg. Police say his truck slammed into two cars leaving the Dunkin Donuts drivethrough, pinning them against this large sign, trapping the two people who died. The entire accident was caught on video, crucial to the police investigation. The video really depicked this horrific accident and it showed that clearly there was nothing other than the tractortrailer that was responsible for this incident. Ive been here 16 years and this is the worst ive ever seen being right there at the time that its happening. Now you can see traffic back open just within the last few minutes on route 222. Meanwhile, that driver facing vehicular homicide, aggravated Assault Charges as well as a long list of traffic violations. Police say he was cooperative but is now in custody to face those charges.
