A former Enyobeni Tavern employee who paid an admission of guilt fine after the deaths of young people and minors at the tavern in Scenery Park in June 2022 has testified that he did not understand he had admitted guilt by paying the fine.
A young survivor of the Enyobeni Tavern tragedy told the East London regional court on Tuesday that alcohol was openly sold to underage youths, and described how he had fought to escape the venue in which 21 children met their end in June last year.
Siyakhangela Ndevu, and his wife, Vuyokazi, stand accused of contravention of the Liquor Act for allegedly selling alcohol to underage children or coercing employees to sell to minors.
A minor took the stand in the East London Regional Court to testify in the trial of the infamous Enyobeni tavern owner and its manager. Twenty-one young people died in the tavern in June 2022. An application was made by state prosecutor advocate Thango Pangalele on Tuesday asking for the public and media to be excused from the courtroom during the minors' evidence.
