If the idea of vegan comfort food feels like an inherent misnomer, it’s probably because you haven’t tried the chicken-fried cauliflower steak sandwich from the new pop-up Vegan & Sara.
While this sandwich is built around a slab of cauliflower that gets breaded and fried to crispy perfection, it feels entirely familiar and soul-satisfying. Chef Stephanie Lopez stacks that well-seasoned cauliflower on buttered Texas toast with garlicky mashed potatoes and a creamy vegan gravy laced with flecks of black pepper and a hint of thyme for a bite that’s simultaneously indulgent and virtuous.
