Hours after the windows of Noodle Tree were doused with red, spray-painted racism, San Antonio showed up with an extra hands and hearts to clean and support owner Mike Nguyen.
Though shaken, Nguyen is healing by highlighting the heart that showed up the next morning — not the cowardice committed in darkness Saturday night.
Nguyen found the vandalism Sunday morning, after a days-long barrage of comments from people who disagreed with the comments he made during a CNN interview on Wednesday. During the CNN Newsroom spot with Poppy Harlow and Jim Sciutto, Nguyen denounced Gov. Abbott's decision to end Texas' mask mandate, and said the safeguard would continue to be required at his restaurant. Nguyen is battling lymphoma and is considered at risk for contracting the virus.

San Antonio Burger Week, now in its third year, brings burgerphiles a multitude of creative ways to experience their favorite food while giving back to the community in a time of need. Dozens of restaurants, bars and food trucks are serving up $5 or $8 specialty burgers during the citywide event, which runs from February 26 until March 7. Proceeds from each specialty burger sold benefit the San Antonio Food Bank during what’s arguably its greatest time of need in decades.

It's hard to consider The Jerk Shack an underdog at this point. The wee spot, that's quite literally a shack, opened in San Antonio's West Side in 2018 has been lauded by several national sites and newspapers, and even won over local hearts. So when they unleash a new menu item, the city's collective head snaps to attention.
That's what they did last week with the drop of their new — hold on to something because this is a mouthful — jerk-n-mac birria taco.
