French MPs vote to enshrine abortion right in constitution

France's lower house of parliament overwhelmingly approved Tuesday a measure to inscribe abortion as a "guaranteed freedom" in the constitution, a pledge made by President Emmanuel Macron last year.The government chose the term "guaranteed freedom" to thread a needle between the lower house, which earlier voted to enshrine the "right" to an abortion, and the Senate, which is dominated by centre-right parties and which so far has approved only "freedom" for abortion.

Vietnam Communist Party chief attends parliament session after health concerns

HANOI (Reuters) -Vietnam's top leader, Communist Party head Nguyen Phu Trong, on Monday attended a session of the National Assembly after concerns had been raised for days over his health. Earlier this month, contrary to normal practice, Trong, 79, had not been included in official schedules of meetings held with Vietnam's leaders by visiting Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Laos' Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone. Trong has been at the helm of the ruling Communist Party since 2011 and holds the top job in Vietnam's one-party political system.

South Korea passes bill to ban dog meat trade

The South Korean Parliament passed a bill to ban the selling or production of dog meat. Parliament voting: On Tuesday, the bill was approved by the National Assembly with a unanimous 208-0 vote. While formal endorsement by the Cabinet Council and the signature of President Yoon Suk-yeol are still required for it to become law, these steps are generally seen as mere formalities.
