Thandi Modise back in court on animal cruelty charges
Thandi Modise has pleaded not guilty to six charges of animal cruelty. She is accused of causing the deaths of 79 animals on her property.
Thandi Modise, speaker of the National Assembly in Parliament, is back in Potchefstroom Regional Court on six charges of animal cruelty.
The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) filed charges against Modise after it found scores of dead animals on her North West farm back in 2014. The organisation has roped in Afriforum to pursue a private prosecution against the speaker.

Modise pleaded not guilty to six charges of animal cruelty after scores of animals were found dead on her North West farm in 2014.
National Assembly Speaker Thandie Modise has been acquitted of charges relating to animal cruelty by the Potchefstroom Regional Court on Friday after the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) filed charges against her after finding dozens of dead animals on her North West farm back in 2014.
Instead of Modise, the court determined that the man that she had hired to look after animals – but failed in his duties when he left the farm complaining that he hadn’t been paid – should be held responsible.
NSPCA to appeal after Thandi Modise acquitted of animal cruelty charges
The NSPCA has instructed their legal team to appeal the judgement against Thandi Modise after she was acquitted of animal cruelty charges.
The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) are set to appeal the judgement handed down to Thandi Modise on Friday.
Modise, speaker of the National Assembly in Parliament, was acquitted of all six charges relating to animal cruelty in the Potchefstroom Regional Court today, 30 April.
The court determined the man she hired to look after the animals “failed in his duties” when he left the farm complaining that he hadn’t been paid and that he should be held responsible.
