Indian researcher exploring 'strange metals' linked to semiconductors

The research will help to bridge the gap between theory and experiments of these phases and provide key insights into the non-trivial role of quantum mechanics that shapes the correlated behavior of electrons in these strange metals.

For the first time, scientists 'see' black holes swallowing neutron stars

Text Size: A+ New Delhi: In a first, an international team of scientists, including researchers from India, have confirmed the detection of a collision between a black hole and a neutron star, by analysing the gravitational waves created by two such events in January last year. Gravitational waves are ripples in the space-time fabric created by extreme events, such as the collision of two blackholes or two neutron stars. While gravitational waves from several such collisions have been detec...

Banning the sale of fossil-fuel cars benefits the climate when replaced by electric cars

If a ban were introduced on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars, and they were replaced by electric cars, the result would be a great reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. That is the finding of new research from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, looking at emissions from the entire life cycle - from manufacture of electric cars and batteries, to electricity used for operation.

Insights from complexity science: More trust in self-organization needed

E-Mail Globalization, digitalization, sustainabilization - three major waves of transformation are unfolding around the world. The social upheaval caused by these transformation processes has given rise to populist movements that endanger social harmony and threaten democratic values. What rules and institutions can promote stability in the face of such systemic risks? A new study published by the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) offers some surprising answers. The coro...

A magnetic twist to graphene

Credit: Jose Lado Electrons in materials have a property known as spin, which is responsible for a variety of properties, the most well-known of which is magnetism. Permanent magnets, like the ones used for refrigerator doors, have all the spins in their electrons aligned in the same direction. Scientists refer to this behaviour as ferromagnetism, and the research field of trying to manipulate spin as spintronics. Down in the quantum world, spins can arrange in more exotic ways, giving rise to...
