The Bayou History Center helps Houma-Thibodaux area residents trace their family trees and does other research on the community s past.
We asked Executive Director Patty Whitney to tell us about the Thibodaux group s services and needs. Here are her edited answers.
What services do you provide?
We provide genealogical assistance and resource information through personal and online contacts. We also make educational presentations as requested.
I write a monthly column on history for “Insight” magazine, a publication of the Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce. I also provide numerous articles, transcriptions and data compilations for publication in the Terrebonne Genealogical Society’s journal, “Terrebonne Life Lines.”

Local sales taxes are divided between parish governments, law enforcement and levee, road and school districts.
According to totals from the Terrebonne Sales and Use Tax Department, Terrebonne Parish collected about $124.5 million last year. That’s a $560,000 increase from 2019.
Lafourche’s gains were even stronger. According to monthly collection totals reported by the Lafourche School Board’s Sales Tax Department, the parish collected about $84.9 million in 2020, a $6.7 million increase.
“It was quite surprising to see sales tax revenue trend up in 2020, especially during a pandemic,” said Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce CEO Tammy Ledet. “When a need is presented, it is often fulfilled by our community. Local businesses needed support, and the people of our city and parish responded. Wayne Robinson was named Gray Office manager and consumer lender.
Katie Portier was named the bank’s marketing director.
Robinson has 12 years of banking experience, previously serving as assistant branch manager and loan assistant, credit analyst, administrative loan assistant and teller. He is a member of the Terrebonne Men’s Carnival Club and is a Thibodaux United Competitive Soccer coach. He has previously served as a Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce ambassador. He is a 2003 graduate of South Lafourche High.
Portier previously served as a marketing associate at the bank. She received her bachelor’s degree in mass communication and public relations from Nicholls State University in 2009. Portier has 11 years of marketing and nonprofit experience. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Houma and Junior Auxiliary of Houma. She graduated from Terrebonne High in 2005.
