A fine line in faith and reality | News, Sports, Jobs

Richard Westlund While I may shock some of you with comments I make in this article, I do consider myself a Christian. I believe in the teachings of Jesus. I also believe in the destiny of mankind. We speak of, and accept the Bible, as the word of God. We must remember, however, that it was not written by God. The New Testament was written by dedicated people who considered Jesus as the son of God, but not common man. They could not believe that any man could do as Jesus did, even though that ...

K.T. Oslin, Country Star of the '80s and '90s, Dies at 78

After signing to RCA and rebranding as "K.T.," Oslin released her debut album 80s Ladies in 1987. The sweeping, nostalgic title track ballad was a breakout hit, only peaking at No. 7 on  Billboards Hot Country Songs chart but winning song of the year at the 1988 CMA Awards -- the first-ever female songwriter winner in the category -- and best country vocal performance, female at the 88 Grammys. It became Oslins signature song and established the earthy Oslin as a star, as  Ladies next two si...

The Thing Called Love movie review (1994)

Of course you go to River Phoenixs last finished film in a certain state of mind. You remember his clarity and power in films like "Running on Empty" and "Dogfight," and against those images you hold the shots of his dead body on the sidewalk outside the Viper Club. His death still seems all wrong. How could he have been so careless of his responsibility to his own future? These thoughts are there as Peter Bogdanovichs "The Thing Called Love" begins, but there are more pragmatic thoughts, too: ...

Nuance and complications in Olukorede Yishau's 'Vaults of Secrets'

Advertisement ‘Vaults of Secrets’ is an extremely captivating collection of 10 stories centered around secrets. It sheds light and perhaps serves as a reminder that we all have secrets that may interfere with our daily lives and possibly ruin us at some point in our lives. With themes around cultism, incest, infidelity, domestic violence, I got the chills so many times from some of the stories in this book; the cliffhangers were frustrating too. It completely blew my mind and managed to sur...

The duality of individuality in Olukorede Yishau's 'Vaults of Secrets'

Advertisement To infer that secrets are secreted from actions that societal and/or cultural constitutions do not embrace, is a fact brilliantly portrayed in Olukorede Yishau’s ‘Vaults of Secrets’. Through the characters we fortunately meet in this collection of ten short stories, the author boldly and tellingly reintroduces the “individual as a dual being” — a dual being with two-sided identity: a private identity and the one s/he intrepidly presents before society or, say, his/her ...
