A Suffolk homicide detective allowed two police officers involved in the case of Kenny Lazo to be in the same room during an interrogation, according to testimony in the wrongful death case.

Joseph Link said that he was asked two questions by jurors during his appearance years ago before the grand jury investigating the death of Kenny Lazo, with prosecutors asking him no questions. 

Police violated several commonly accepted standard practices during and after the April 12, 2008, incident that culminated in Lazo's death, testified Timothy Longo, chief of police at the University of Virginia.

The plaintiff's attorneys in the wrongful death trial brought by the family of Kenny Lazo are seeking to paint a picture of Lazo as a hardworking family man, while Suffolk County's lawyers contend he was involved in alleged drug dealing.

Burned down in the 2020 protests, residents say the remnants of the Third Precinct building have served as a traumatic reminder of police brutality.

Detectives charged the 31-year-old Brentwood man with two counts of second-degree murder.

The questioning of the Suffolk detective in the Kenny Lazo wrongful death trial focused on whether Lazo had a gun during the struggle with police. Lazo died later that evening after the encounter.
