Dutch journalist union sees eventual AI copyright litigation in the Netherlands

Dutch journalists' union NVJ believes it is a good thing that The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement. According to The New York Times, OpenAI has used millions of articles to train chatbots without permission. The American media group wants the defendants to be held responsible for "billions of dollars in damages" resulting from the "illegal copying and use of The Times' uniquely valuable work."

Shell no longer allowing journalists to participate in financial presentations

Shell will no longer give press conferences when presenting its annual and quarterly results. Only financial analysts will be allowed at the presentation of the oil and gas giantโ€™s third-quarter results and future presentations. Journalists will be allowed to call in and listen but not ask questions, Financieele Dagblad reports.

Media oppose mandatory 'charity fee' for Lowlands festival coverage

Several Dutch media outlets are unhappy about the "charity fee" journalists must pay if they want to cover the Lowlands Festival. NOS, AD, and ANP will not report at all if a "charity fee" has to be paid, they claimed. Concert organizer MOJO charges accredited media 10 euros per person in return for access to the festival site. According to MOJO, the money goes to charities the festival works with. Those who do not pay will not be allowed to enter the grounds.

Netherlands climbs 22 spots in press freedom ranking

The Netherlands has risen 22 places in the press freedom index by journalist organization Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF). That puts our country back in sixth place after falling 22 positions last year due to aggression against journalists and the murder of crime reporter Peter R. de Vries.
