On August 21, 2023, the Maryland Department of State Police (MDSP), Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) and University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) announced a new public-private collaboration for lifesaving trauma response for Marylanders. 

Marylands first responders are now carrying whole blood on board their air-lifted emergency helicopters to perform transfusions in the field for patients.

Maryland is the first state to offer a statewide lifesaving trauma response initiative that carries whole blood aboard state police helicopters.
