Letter: Discussion on diversity must include Asians
I was struck by Mr. Alcauskas’ op-ed published in the April 18 edition of The Enterprise. I join him in desiring a more diverse (and less NIMBY) Davis, particularly given our community’s under-index in Black and Latinx families.
However, it was jarring to read a lengthy op-ed around diversity (or lack thereof) in Davis and not encounter one mention of the Asian community. The issue of race in America is too often binary — Black and white. In this case, at least Mr. Alcauskas is ternary in acknowledging Latinx.
That said, a discussion on diversity in Davis without the mention of the sizable and varied AAPI community is inherently flawed. Per the 2010 census, Davis is 22% Asian. And yet Mr. Alcauskas views Davis as “an un-integrated, non-diverse white island.”
