New Delhi [India], May 21 (ANI): Mirwaiz Maulvi Mohammad Farooq Shah, the Mirwaiz (a hereditary position of religious authority) of Kashmir and Chairman of the All Jammu and Kashmir Awami Action Committee, was assassinated on May 21, 1990, at his residence at Nageen, Srinagar, by terrorists affiliated to the Hizbul Mujahideen (HM).
Abdullah Bangroo, the commander, was subsequently killed. During his funeral procession, dozens of mourners died in CRPF firing in the Hawal area of Srinagar. Twelve years later, on May 21, 2002, unknown attackers killed another moderate leader Abdul Ghani Lone of the People s Conference, at a rally to mark the death anniversary of Mirwaiz Farooq.
Pakistan today faces the geopolitical challenge of balancing between the US and China and choosing between Turkey and the Arab world, besides suffering from internal fault lines like the Pashtun, Baloch, and Sindhi movements amidst a highly radicalised society.
To discuss on the future of Pakistan and its impact on geopolitical dynamics, Usanas Foundation and Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) jointly organised an in-house webinar on “Pakistan’s Future: Geopolitical Dilemmas, Economic Woes and Troubling Fault Lines” by bringing together prominent experts on Pakistan from India as well as the world.
The speakers in the event were Deputy Director of Asia Program at Woodrow Wilson Centre, Michael Kugelman; Former Bureau Chief of Reuters and Pakistan expert, Myra MacDonald; geopolitical expert Sushant Sareen; Member of the National Security Advisory Board and VIF consultant, Tilak Devasher; and the Director of Vivekananda International Foundation, Arvind Gupta.

Founder of Zoho software corp and tech entrepreneur Sridhar Vembu, who was recently conferred with the Padma Shri, has now joined the Advisory Board of National Security led by NSA Ajit Doval. With this, Vembu will be a part of an advisory panel that gives inputs and advice to Doval, who in turn acts as a single point advisor to the Prime Minister.
Vembu, who previously lived in Silicon Valley and then moved to a village in Tamil Nadu, will be assigned a particular study that will be implemented across various ministries after being analysed by the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS).
