British lawmakers voted Tuesday to approve new restrictions to curb the spread of the omicron variant, but Prime Minister Boris Johnson faced a major revolt by lawmakers in his own Conservative Party who are opposed to the regulations.

The result was a blow to the embattled PM, whose approval ratings have plunged amid ethics scandals and allegations his government breached its own pandemic restrictions.

The new mandates were economically damaging and limited individual freedoms, argued many Conservatives legislators, with one calling them "a slippery slope."

Boris Johnson has just suffered easily the biggest parliamentary rebellion in his time as prime minister, about twice as big as the previous record, a year ago. Paradoxically, he won the vote by a huge majority, because the Labour Party voted for it.
