CANTON Britnee Allens rental house and new job at the Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority are glowing examples of an agency success story — or the fruits of favoritism from the top. On one hand: Using her government-funded Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8), the unemployed single mom moved her family from Orrville into the Plain Local School District and a house on 41st Street NW the Housing Authority had recently purchased. Then in short order, Allen landed a newly-added Housing Aut...

But on the other hand: Hill knew Allen personally. Their now seventh-grade sons, both currently living in the Plain school system, played together on an Ohio Phenom Academy travel basketball team in 2017, and have played against each other since. And that house Allen leases on 41st Street was the only one purchased last year by the Housing Authority. Some former and current Housing Authority employees said they believe Hill used his position to give Allen special treatment. Last month, an ...

In love and in life, we make choices. In the end, we hope those decisions were the right ones. That we selected the proper career. That maybe our husband or wife was our one true love, our forever Valentine. And that all those paths we chose along the way, perhaps, were woven together into some sort of destiny. But what if wed made different choices? Would it have changed who we became? Different choices may have altered lifes course for Russell Staufken For Russell Staufken, different cho...

Except, many Ohioans know that the 1978 forecast turned out to be anything but a normal winter front. It became a legendary winter storm that has been the source of countless stories. The Blizzard of 1978 was a three-day monster storm that killed 51 Ohioans — one, from Stark County — doing much of its destruction on Jan. 26, 1978. "It brought sights and sounds that havent been equaled in all the bad winter weather that has come and gone since then," the Canton Repository wrote in 2013. T...

CANTON A new hospital transparency rule was supposed to make it easier for patients to find prices for common surgeries and procedures — but the task is still practically brain surgery. More than a year ago, the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services finalized policies for its most recent piece of transparency regulations, which took effect on Jan.1. It requires every hospital in the U.S. — there are 6,090, according to the American Hospital Association — to provide "clear,...

The order directed the Secretary of Health and Human Services to come up with the regulations. Using the premise that transparency encourages choice and competition, the goal was to enable patients to become more active consumers. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which already has regulatory authority over hospitals, placed the new rules into effect on Jan. 1. Those rules require hospitals to make public their standard charges for at least 300 “shoppable services” (70 specifi...
