MACON, Ga. On Monday, Governor Brian Kemp signed a new citizen s arrest bill into law repealing the Civil War-era bill. Calls for change came after last summer s shooting and killing of Ahmaud Arbery, who was killed while jogging through a Brunswick neighborhood. Greg McMichael and his son Travis McMichael chased Arbery because they suspected he committed recent burglaries. It will hopefully hopefully prevent citizens from trying to be the police, Dublin Police Chief Tim Chatman said.
Chief Chatman says he welcomes the news of Governor Kemp signing House Bill 479. Chatman says officers are better trained to deescalate a situation and hopes this law will help keep people safe.

Chief Chatman is used to working with kids and giving them another chance with the Transformers program. House Bill 272 could give teens under 18 another chance by not charging them as an adult for certain crimes. Chief Chatman says this could help the youth but hurt the judicial system.
