Oldsmar water plant cyberattack prompts reviews of Southwest Florida utilities

Naples Daily News Two Southwest Florida utilities said they use remote access in their computer systems at water treatment plants but have security measures in place to protect water supplies from events like what happened in Oldsmar last month. Bonita Springs Utilities and Marco Island told the Daily News they have remote access to their computer systems, a vulnerability cited when the Oldsmar water plant was hacked.  BSU has in place certain protocols that make an attack like Oldsmar less likely, BSU spokeswoman Jennifer Hamilton said in an email. Hamilton said remote access for BSU is limited to approved vendors and staff access through secure firewall configurations.

Rental assistance program announced By NATHAN MAYBERG - | Feb 24, 2021 Lee County has received a new round of funds for its LeeCARES rental and utilities assistance program for those who have suffered lost income during the COVID-19 pandemic and who fall below 80% of the area’s median income. The new $23.3 million emergency rental assistance program will be launched March 1, Lee County Assistant County Manager Glen Salyer stated Tuesday at a meeting of the Lee County Board of County Commissioners. The program will work similarly to previous programs the county ran last year through funding received through the CARES Act. Payments to landlords or utility companies will be made on behalf of residents who can show their income was negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
