BY MIKE PANOZZO Three times Tim Foy Jr. trailed his opponent in the final frame during match play at the USBC Masters, and three times he stared down defeat with critical conversions.  Of course, it’s probably safe to say the 34-year-old Delaware native isn’t easily intimidated, given his day job as a corrections officer at the Maryland State Penitentiary in Baltimore.  “No matter what kind of challenge I’m facing on the lanes, it’s nothing compared with what I have to face in my day job,” he said.  The most memorable of those fantastic finishes was his come-from-behind in over four-time Masters champion Jason Belmonte in the opening round of match play. Trailing by 67 pins after an opening score of 147, Foy fought back and doubled in the final frame to steal the win, 588-585.

RENO, Nev. - Tim Foy Jr. of Seaford, Delaware, is having a memorable week at the National Bowling Stadium, and his momentum continued Sunday night in the pre-tournament qualifier for the 2021  The 34-year-old two-hander averaged more than 236 to pace the 53-player PTQ field with a 1,893 total for his eight games, including a 276 finish. The 43 players advancing from the PTQ will round out the 108-competitor field for the U.S. Open, which kicks off Tuesday, after a full day of practice squads Monday. The other 65 bowlers scheduled to compete this week earned direct entry into the event based on their on-lane performances throughout 2020 and in other top-tier events.

BOWL com | Faulkner leads qualifying at 2021 USBC Masters

Gary Faulkner Jr. of Memphis, Tennessee, paced the 216 players at the National Bowling Stadium, averaging 214.67 on the way to a 15-game total of 3,220. He had blocks of 1,103, 1,088 and 1,029 on the 40-foot, heavy-volume lane condition and never fell below second place. All competitors this week bowled three five-game blocks over three days, with total pinfall determining the 63 bowlers who now will join defending champion Jakob Butturff of Tempe, Arizona, in the iconic double-elimination match-play bracket. USBC and Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Norm Duke of Clermont, Florida, also the 1993 USBC Masters champion, turned in his highest set of the week to surge into second place with a 3,216 total.
