The East Rochester Bombers girls basketball team concluded their dominant 2021 campaign with a 13-1 record and their first sectional championship in 29 years. The Lady Bombers defeated Avon, 54-26, in the Section V Class C1 girls championship game on Friday night at East Rochester High School. Junior guard Sam Lewis led the way with 14 points, 11 rebounds while Zoe Zutes and Lily Funk blocked six shots each. Funk would score 11 points while senior Zoe Zutes would close out her 6-year varsity career with a 10 point effort and a sectional banner.

The marquee match-up of Thursday night’s sectional schedule was in the boys Class C1 semifinal as the #5 seed Marcus Whitman Wildcats took on #1 seed Lyons Lions. Both teams brought senior laden rosters and a very successful recent postseason track record. Marcus Whitman was attempting to defend last year’s championship, the school’s first in 44 years. Lyons was trying to win an unprecedented 4th straight sectional title. Something had to give and it did in the form of a brilliantly executed gameplan and timely shooting in favor of the Marcus Whitman Wildcats, 64-54. Three Wayne-Finger Lakes teams advanced to sectional championship games on Wednesday night in the Section V basketball semifinals. Wayne and Mynderse will play for a Sectional title in Class B1 & B2 respectively on Friday night while the East Rochester girls will play for a championship in Class C1. In the Class B2 boys semifinal round, #6 Mynderse visited #3 C.G. Finney and put on an offensive performance for the ages. Mynderse buried 16 three-pointers including 8 from junior Troy Kabat and 6 from senior Jared King as the Blue Devils posted 54 first half point to open up a 25 point halftime lead.
