i believe history will hold him accountable. i believe republican primary voters know we need new leadership in this party. that was from cnn s state of the union earlier today. pence went on to say judgment about trump s conduct on january 6th should be left to the american people, as you heard him say, in the upcoming primaries. for more on all this, let s talk to cnn presidential historian tim neftali. tim, great to see you. great seeing you, fred. so pence was evacuated from the capitol on january 6th while trump supporters stormed the building, many of them chanting hang mike pence because they were outraged that he was doing his constitutional duty in certifying the election results. what do you make of his comments today, that he says the words of the former president and even the actions were reckless? well, i think that vice president pence or former vice president pence left the door
military responds. i am certain that our government and nato allies and of course ukraine are looking to see morale in the russian troops in ukraine. to what extent were they happy about the way in which moscow handled the wagner mutiny? to what extent are they questioning they re putting their lives on the line every day? we don t know that yet. but that s something to watch for in the days and weeks ahead. cnn, tim, has learned on president biden s call on saturday with other western leaders, the message was to keep the temperature low as all this was playing out in russia. how do you assess the biden administration s handling of this? i think its handling so far, at least its public handling has been superb. what was very important from the start was not to give either
message saying his troops would turn around and go back to field camps to avoid shedding russian blood. supporters chanted wagner as fighters drove out of rostov giving prigozhin handshakes as he left in his suv. the kremlin says it s dropped charges and prigozhin will go to belarus while promising his fighters contracts with the russian military. for now a crisis apparently averted, but this very public betrayal and the mercenary s short but unimpeded march on moscow reveals deep weakness at the heart of the putin regime. ivan watson, cnn. thank you, ivan. let s discuss all of this and more of the stunning events in russia with tim neftali, the cnn presidential historian, former director of the nixon presidential library. tim, thanks very much for joining us. putin has served as either president or prime minister of
archives. pat cipollone, the president s own lawyer, said they should be transferred. but in the chaotic final days of the transition, president trump didn t do it. the national archives found out about this five mos later and asked for them. there s no evidence that vice president biden had a collection of two boxes of classified material that he held on to despite being told by lawyers that he shouldn t. why he had these materials, i have no idea. what kinds of materials they are, i also don t know. but in the case of president trump, it looked like the president himself had been involved, whereas in the case of former vice president biden, it s not clear that he even knew that these materials were interfiled. we will learn more as the various special prosecutors do their work. okay. among the many reasons i always love talking to you. tim neftali, thank you so much. thanks, fredricka. much more on this new development straight ahead. so adding “and” student might feel daun
more classified documents popping up, they feel like there s any kind of cover-up or they re not getting the full story, something like this can become a serious political liability. mm-hmm. all right. paula reid, arlette saenz, thanks to you both. we appreciate it. we ll talk further about all of this right now with tim neftali, a cnn presidential historian and the former director of the nixon presidential library. tim, good to see you. so even from arlette s reporting, the white house s approach here is we re trying to be as transparent as possible by being up front and letting you know about this latest discovery involving attorneys at the wilmington, delaware residence. these additional six pages. is that how it should be interpreted that they are being transparent, they are getting out in front, or is this something else you see? well, i think that the biden administration is probably
