AMSTERDAM (AP) — Throw another mammoth on the barbie? An Australian company on Tuesday lifted the glass cloche on a meatball made of lab-grown cultured meat

A cell-based meat company resurrected the extinct woolly mammoth in the form of a lab-grown meatball.

The woolly mammoth was chosen because it’s a symbol of diversity loss and a symbol of climate change.

Its creators say the mammoth meatball is meant to fire up public debate about cultivated meat. Livestock doesn’t need to be killed to produce it.

The meatball was made of sheep cells inserted with a singular mammoth gene called myoglobin.

The mammoth meatball is a one-off and has not been tasted, even by its creators, nor is it planned to be put into commercial production.

An Australian cultured meat start-up is going very old school in its efforts to get people excited about the future of food.

A meatball made from lab-grown mammoth flesh was revealed on Tuesday at a scientific exhibition in the Netherlands. According to

It was presented not on top of spaghetti, but as a source of protein to get people talking about the future of meat.
